question

Post by corybodette » Mon Feb 11, 2013 8:44 pm

I have a respironics cpap machine with a humidifier and the last couple nights the tank on the humidifier has been empty when i wake up in the morning. Is this going to damage the machine or am i ok with the tank going dry each night.

It's best not to let it run dry. Has the ambient humidity level in your house changed, or are you just not filling it up to the line?

You may have to turn down the humidifier setting so it lasts all night, or boost the humidity in your house or room. During the winter when we run forced air furnaces, the air can get pretty dry. I put a bowl of water right on the floor register to add some humidty, but my machine still takes at least two nights to use up a tank full of water.

I know everyone says to clean the tank out each time and not to top off, but I do it all the time. If you are immunocompromised, you should follow the cleaning schedule carefully, but otherwise, just fill it each night before bed.

humidity in my motel room runs in the 20 to 30% range and the temp is in the 65 to 70 range. the thing is that its baseboard hot water for heat. i think i will need to buy a humidifier. the humidifier setting on the machine is only set to 2 so i mean i can lower it but its already pretty low.

If you are staying in a motel then fill the bathtub with warm water at night and leave the door open. It might be enough humidity to help you last the night.

Please fill out the equipment on your profile. There's a link in my signature line to help you do so.

We need to know which Respironics machine you have.

The air will usually stink if you run out of water. It shouldn't damage the machine, but it's probably not good for it.

There's a good chance you have an air leak somewhere that's wasting your water. We may have some hints if we know what machine you have. There's a link in my sig line with info on how to tell which Respironics machine you have.

Your humidifier should not run dry in one night. There are some good recogmendations here. I had a Resmed humidifier that would be dry every morning. After trying similar suggestions to increase the room humidity, I called my DME. They sent a man out with a replacement humidifier, and mine was repaired. Try the suggestions to increase the room's humidity.... then call your DME. Good luck with that...

Soak all the towels, wring them out, and hang or spread them about the room right before bed.
