Mask break in period?

Post by hyperlexis » Wed Feb 06, 2013 10:07 pm

Has anyone else had a break in period with their masks? Where the mask fits better with time?

Maybe it's me but at least with my V2 FF mask, the seal has gotten much better and far more comfortable over several months use. No clue how this happens. but its either the mask, ...or its my face. The seal and comfort were not great when new. but over time it leaks far less and feels much better to wear than when new out of the box.

Do mask cushions break-in, like shoes? I never thought silcone would change shape/become less stiff with repeat use but perhaps it does?

My pillows seem to soften and become more comfortable until they start to leak three weeks later. My husband uses his nasal mask cushion for six-seven months, as he think the cushion molds to his face over time. I can't convince him to change more frequently to decrease leaks.

Just like you suggest, I have noticed that for my mask it does feel better after a few weeks to a month then it does when brand new. This seems to continue for me until about 5 1/2 - 6 months in and then I can tell that it is time to break in a new one again. I usually just replace the silicone cushion and support as the hard plastic portion of my mask and the headgear are still usable for at least another go around or two.

That has definitely been my experience. I thought I was imagining things so I greatly appreciate you essentially letting me know I really wasn't

My mask starts to leak around the temples around the third month. During that time-frame, I have to continually tighten the straps due to mask and strap usage. I haven't notice a difference between a new or used mask, but I have a hard time controlling the leaks around the third month. That's when I go to a new mask. I do know folks that have used my mask up to 12 months with no leaks or any issues.

I've been using the Quattro FX FF mask for a month now. Silicone cushion has been holding up rather well. No leaks. First three or four nights had real problems of leaking and lack of sleep. Figured out the problem: wasn't fitting it properly! As soon as I began to fit it properly--it has been three weeks now--no leaks at all and blessed restful sleep.

All in all, I have been using the same mask cushion, which I clean each morning almost immediately after use, for about a month now. I think the answer lies in the fitting of your mask, not the actual use that makes the big difference; in my case, only after a few tries, I was able to achieve the optimum fit, effortlessly, each night. Don't even have to think about it anymore. This might be the answer in your case.
