whistling hose

Post by herefishy » Thu Feb 07, 2013 7:58 am

I just got a new s9 and the slimline hose, and the first couple of nights I used my old, heavy hose, then switched to the slimline.
It was quiet as could be with the old hose, but whistles now with the slimline, even with the cozy on it. Tried cutting down the epr but that didn't help - any ideas?

Could the tubing have been damaged? A pinhole may cause leaking, but I am just guessing.

I've noticed mine wheezes a bit on exhale. Did you change your machine setting to slimline?

Yes, I changed my hose setting, and I tried to detect any leaks, but couldn't hear or feel any. Just about to take it off and soak it in hot water.

Is it just on exhale? Does it stop as your breathing settles down and slows for sleep?

Yes, if I concentrate on breathing slowly and "lightly" it quiets down. I probably just need to squirt some oil down there - or maybe WD40. Whoops - edit to add "LOL".

Interesting that noise on exhale began with the change to the slimline hose.
I hear a noise also upon exhale an also it goes away if I make an effort to breathe more softly.
I have always used the Climateline which is smaller diameter than my regular hose for my PR S1. It think I will change hoses and see if the same noise is present with the regular size hose.
Lots of people hear the noise...louder for some than others but others say they don't hear a thing. We have never been able to figure out the cause...maybe it is something as simple as hose diameter.
It doesn't keep me awake so I have not bothered trying to figure out what causes the noise. I guess I can try a different hose.
Sure won't hurt anything.

My S9 always did that. It's a manufacturing defect in the motor (that's my claim). If you Google it I think you'll find some other complaints about it. I don't know that there's a way to fix it.

If the sound is indeed coming from the hose itself, you might try routing the hose in a different direction.
I once in awhile get a "reed" effect (whining on exhale) if the hose is aimed "just so".

I know you said it's the hose that whistling. But, I know my mask will make if the cushions are not seated perfectly in the frame.

The S9s have a pretty well documented whistle. So I doubt it's the mask, I sometimes wonder if the machines have just been built to be so quiet that we just notice more of these noises.

My machine is fine, it's just when I changed the hose I noticed the whistle. In fact, I wonder if the well-documented noises from the machine are all from the slimline hose they are supplied with?

I use the climateline hose and have a whistle but the climateline is a smaller diameter hose like the slimline. I think Pugsy is going to try to test the hose diameter theory. I'd do it but I don't think I can do without my climateline until spring and summer.

Great theory...no help with the noise though.
I just now tried it for about 5 minutes. Whatever noise I am hearing on exhale was essentially unchanged.

I did do something not long ago that really helped reduce the noise but I don't know if it is a good idea to promote it.
I used 2 filters..One was the filter that is more porous and can be washed and reused and the other was the white fine filter that is hypoallergenic and is disposable.

I don't know enough about possible restricted airflow problems using 2 filters so I didn't want to promote it without knowing.

I am talking about the standard "more porous" filter and the white fine filter. It's hard to tell them apart unless side by side.
The standard more porous filter is the one that is usually supplied with the machine.
