I take clonazepam for restless leg syndrome. I'm thinking about upping the dosage because I'm moving around too much at night and it's causing mask leaks that wake me up. Right now I'm taking .5 mg (1 pill) and I'm thinking about adding a half a pill. (my doctor said I could take up to two).
Would adding melatonin have any adverse effects? I'm a 40 year old woman in good physical condition.
Thanks!
Jeanne

You really should talk to your doctor about adding any new medication including suplements like melatonin. I had just started taking melatonin prior to seeing my sleep doc for the first time- I wasn't sure if I should tell him or not but in the end I did. He actually was glad I did and recomended I take a higher dose- he uses it a lot with patients with sleep disorders. Not all docs are going to react the same but it is important that they know everything you take for your safety. No one here can say if it will work for you or not or if its safe or not- only your doctor can.

Hey! Another Austinite!!!
I take clonazepram (used to take 2 a night, now I'm down to 1). But I don't take it for RLS - (anxiety) so I was surprised to see what you use it for. I also take Ambien and Xryem as well as Zoloft. Now, I have to say, you may want to ask your doctor about Ambien, because if you're like me (and from the sounds of it you are), the clonazepram doesn't make you very sleepy anymore, hence the restless sleep...or your legs are REALLY active - in which case I would ask what other drugs would help your condition. I thought clonazepram was just for panic disorders and seizures...I could be wron though???
BTW which sleep therapist do you see?

My experience
I was taking melatonin and lorazepam (Ativan) to help with sleep. I was diagnosed wit OSA, restless legs, and general insomnia (slept for less than an hour in sleep test).
Sleep doc said lorazepam was harmful for OSA, and melatonin did not work with OSA and had me "withdraw" from both. (Anybody who has used lorazepam for a while will know that withdrawl can be difficult!)
She put me on miraplex for the RLS - that was a disaster - kept me awake all night. She changed it to neurontin (gabapentin) which seems to help.
I gotta say that I didn't notice any difference when I droppped the melatonin.
derek

I also take Clonazepam (2mg), for sleep and PLMD - this drug should not be stopped suddenly, but tapered off...else, depression can set in.
In addition, I take 75mg Mirapex, and just started Gabapentin (300mg).
The Clonazepam (Klonipin) DOES help me "get sleepy", and is a sleep aid; I don't go to bed until it "kicks in".
