new here

Post by rcinsolo » Thu Jan 31, 2013 7:31 am

Hi everyone. I am a truck driver and while conducting a d.o.t. physical the doctor said due to my BMI (38), neck size of 17 inches, and the size of my mouth or tongue they decided I needed a sleep study. I am now 2 hrs out of my sleep study they only had me sleep for 6 hours and at no point in the study did they wake me up to put the cpap mask on me. Should I be optomistic about this?? Or because I am a truck driver should I just assume they will hook me to one of these machines regardless. I have since put myself on a diet and have lost 4 lbs in 6 days. I am 6'0" and at original physical I weighed 263 now I am 259. Any input would be greatly appreciated I am kinda nervous about all this. Thanks

You may or may not need the machine. Wait till you get to discuss the findings. Not everyone meets the lab criteria for a split night study where they slap the mask on you. I didn't but here I am.
AND....you may not even have sleep apnea. My husband is about your size and a truck driver. He doesn't have any indications of sleep apnea and believe me I have watched and listened to him sleep to see. He barely is below the BMI thing to force a sleep study.

They won't hook you up to the machine just because you are a truck driver and maybe a bit large. It doesn't work that way.
Lots of really large people don't have sleep apnea....lots of skinny people do have sleep apnea.

I feel fine every day. I sleep 7 hrs a day and then up and work 11 to 14 hrs with no problems. The only reason I had to have the sleep study is cause the doctor.

Well, consider yourself luck. If i had a CDL, perhaps I would have been diagnosed years ago.

For years I've been complaining about begin tired, lacking energy, falling asleep at my desk (at work and at home), falling asleep watching TV, and grotesque snoring. I mentioned it again while seeing a specialist for an unrelated health matter. This time the fricken doctor listened to what I was saying and didn't put it off to over indulgence in caffeine and stress. I've been drinking Mountain Dew to the tune of 6 Liters a day for years (to stay awake while a zombie).

He ordered overnight pulse and oxygen monitoring -- I was under 80% saturated during much of the night. I had an oxygen concentrator delivered the same day the pulse ox was evaluated. Then off for a sleep study (which took 8 weeks to get scheduled and conducted, TYVM Blue Cross & Blue Shield), where I came back with AHI's over 150 in all positions.

I'm 13 days into CPAP doing fairly well I suppose given what I read on here about others. My AHI is still high (between 10-15 most night), but I"m getting good periods of rest.

BTW congratulations on having an acceptable AHI. What diet plan are you using? I've been considering the "keep the pie closed" diet, but I'm not motivated yet for that. Perhaps in a couple weeks.

Good luck on your diet.

Hey slackmastered. I agree some people definitely need cpaps my mother and brother both have them. I still have my tonsils and the doc said that if those were removed I may possible have no problems at all anymore. As far as my diet I am not on anything other than what I came up with myself. Portion control, eat 3 small meals a day rather than my old 1 large one a day, watch the sodium and sugar intake. NO more soda completly gone water.... 1 8 oz glass of fruit juice a day which I chose v8 splash cause it has lots of fruits and vegetables, 1 cup of raisin bran crunch w/ 2/3 cup milk, and for main meal I have been having a salad with a small bit of dressing, meal is 2 grilled chicken breasts with mixed vegetables... its mainly portion control tho.
