Help, I think I've broken my remstar

Post by gijoel » Sat Jan 19, 2013 7:31 pm

Accidentally dropped my remstar pro m series this morning. The humidfier and cpap snapped off each other as it hit the floor. However, I managed to put the two back together and thought, I made a lucky escape.

Unfortunately when I plugged it back in the buttons on the cpap are always on and I don't get anything on the display. Any chance that I might be able to fix it?

Hi,

If the humidifier can be disconnected, try removing it, and seeing if the blower unit works. If so, you can run without a humidifier until you can get it fixed.

Sorry to hear that this happened. The M-series are pretty sturdy. Many of us here on the forum have two machines, one to keep as a spare and to use when traveling. Using the CPAP is important enough to me (I am all but disabled without it) that I want to have a spare unit.

Haven't needed one till now. Tired to rent one, but they wanted $250/month for it. Ludicrous!

May have to buy an old 2nd hand cpap.

Is it possible water got into the blower unit when you dropped it? If so, see if you can pour water back out of the blower unit in the direction of the humidifier. Then, if you're lucky, it might dry out.

Definitely try removing the blower unit from the humidifier and using it without the humidifier.

On the good side, a good current model PRS1 or S9 unit does a LOT more than the older models like you have. Just be sure to get a data capable model.

Your insurance may pay for a repair or replacement. If a unit is damaged beyond reasonable repair, SOME insurance companies will pay. I found this out after a few years of electrical problems with my M series. I didn't know that and waited the full 5 years, thinking I had to wait, then found out they would have replaced due to the unit not being safe to use, or if the unit wasn't working. If you have insurance, I'd call to see if they want to repair or replace.

Good luck,
Jen

Might is also be possible to claim against your home contents insurance policy? Just a thought

Hi,

I'd go so far as to say criminal. Second Wind CPAP has a REMstar PRO unit with CFLEX for $199 with low hours and a warranty. If you want it with humidifier, add in $50. If your humidifier is OK, you can skip the $50. This means that you can buy and own your own machine for less than a single month of rent from your DME.

This might not be the machine that you want to go forward with for the next few years, but if that is what you have been using and are happy with it, then go for it. The alternative is to pick one up, use it to get you through the next month or two while you figure out a long term plan, then keep this machine as your backup unit and for traveling. That gets you the best of both worlds.
