Old User, New CPAP - Auto Off won't work on REMStar?

Post by RedBackFur » Sun Jan 06, 2013 7:19 pm

I have been using my S8 for almost 4 years. I changed health plans, and the therapists said it was my option a new machine as since they are more comfortable with the REMStar Auto-A-Flex. Besides, there would be no charge for this.
The C-Flex is different feeling then the S8's feature...kind of nice, but the machine is a bit noisier - it whines at various pitches when in use.

So far, so good; I adapt to new things like this easily -- however there is one issue I cannot solve:

I have accessed both the standard and clinicians menu to enable "Auto OFF". Auto[start works fine, but I cannot get "Auto Shutoff" to work. I do not like having to reach over and fidget to find the shut off button of in the morning, or night time break. (Thought I wasn't waiting long enough, but after 40 seconds of blasting, it still wont' auto shut off.)

Is there something I'm missing, or do I have a defective machine?

Auto Off...so the machine will turn off automatically needs to be ON....in the set up menu area.
Then it takes about 30 seconds after you remove the mask for the machine to respond to the perceived large leak..and then it takes another 30 seconds before it shuts off. Normally the last 30 seconds also includes a large leak beeping if you have mask alert on.

So try giving it a little more time and see if it works.

Thanks for the suggestion, Pugsley. Yea, it took 45 seconds to shut off. That is unfortunate. My S8 took less that 10 seconds to shut off. If I let it blast that long, i'd get elbowed in the ribs. I guess I'll only get away with that if I'm sleeping solo. Oh well. I guess the Americans don't build them like the Australians!

They allow longer time be sure you died, before worrying about your wife having to pay the extra electric bill. If I had auto off on my machine it would be disabled, auto on would be enabled. I never wear mittens to bed, so pressing a button isn't a problem, I do not like that it must be held pressed until it powers down. Jim

It may depend on the mask. When using an Optilife pillows mask, my S8 fails to shut off automatically and I have to hit the button to make it stop. The auto shut off works fine with my other masks, including a Mirage Quattro. I don't bother changing the mask type in the menus, I leave it on nasal.

Redbackfur is referring to the Auto Off feature on his new PR System One machine and not his old S8 machine.
So it isn't related to any mask or mask choice.
It is just a feature of the Respironics machines that the Auto off doesn't power off immediately. It never has. Always has to go through so many seconds of large leak (that's what it senses when mask is removed and machine is not turned off manually) and then finally turn off itself.

Thanks, Pugsley. I'm glad you understood my question. On a different note, I Just ordered a 15mm hose. Since this software rev supports both sizes, I wanted to try out the lighter tube. Yes I'm aware of changing the settings. I might try my Pilaro again with it. I pretty much cannot tolerate a nasal pilow; since any side pressure has caused me painful septum burning. But the lighter hose, maybe. The swift LX was specially awful.

Wishing you luck with the combination of the lighter hose and the Pilairo.
Bummer that the other nasal pillows don't work so well.
I have always used the white performance hose with my Respironics machine. It's a little lighter weight and a bit more flexible than the standard gray hose.
Until the new PR S1 machines we of course didn't have a 15 mm hose option. One of these days I am going to get one just to see how much better it might be.

Sorry the machine doesn't shut off quickly enough to suit you. I don't know why Respironics came up with the delayed response unless it was designed to allow for the patient to reseat the mask in an event of large leak without breaking therapy. Some people like for the air to go ahead and blow so it has a chance to wake them up in the event of a large leak.
My machine is close to the bed and within easy reach so out of habit I reach over and turn it off then remove the mask.
I can understand why some people don't want to have to do that but that's pretty much what you have to do if there is someone else in the bed and the air blowing and/or beeping might disturb their sleep.

I'm fine just hitting the power button.
The few times I wake up in a haze, it forces me to clear out the cobwebs before I move.

Just have to say I got my 15mm hose, and I've been using it for about 2 weeks. Really is much lighter. I don't have a hose cover for this one, so its even lighter. I really do like it. There is no noise difference at all. And even with out the "snuggie" I don't have any rainout problems with my System One.

I also used the Performance Hose use mentioned for a period of time. They are more delicate, I noticed they make some crinkle noises when bending. Haven't had that issue with the 15mm I bought.

Still can't tolerate the Swift of the Pilaro for long. My RT said it may be my thick septum or something - hard to say. All noses are different.

Only new issues is that the System One seems to be getting a bit louder now. It isn't "white noise", its more tonal. I can hear it change 2 different pitches on inhale, and one on exhale. Not bad enough to keep me awake at all, just a bit annoying. The other half can't hear it since the hearing aids are on the dresser

One of the experts mentioned the other day that it might be the c-flex(or epr on the Resmed) that causes the two tone noise. I listened to it for so long and this never occurred to me. Might try fiddling with that.

I wish it were a 2 tone noise...its actually THREE different pitches. I don't wish to turn off my C-FLEX, I like how it feels. My ResMed S8, I must say, was MUCH quieter. I've even wiggled the filters around, so its not that either. Oh well, I can usually sleep though it. Just when I wake for my early AM P break, its so dead quiet in the house, I'm more hyper-aware of the whine.
