THE HOSE

Post by tkay714 » Thu Dec 27, 2012 6:54 am

Hi, I've had my cpap only a few days and the hose is not good.
It's permanently kinked into a z shape. I'm going to swap it out as soon as I can.
In the meantime, are there lighter smaller hoses than the standard cpap hose that's
around 1" in diameter with coated wire?

It's always in the way when I sleep!

Is there a longer hose?

Thank you!

Hi tk,

There are a couple of things you can try. Up on CPAP.COM you can look for the "hose buddy" or the "CPAP hose lift system" both will route the hose from above your head. Another option is a hose cozy. These felt sleeves are used mainly to prevent rainout but will add strength (a bit) to the hose and also provide you with the feeling of felt rather than cold vinyl.
What you need to do first, though, is to register and add your equipment to your profile so others know what you have and what to recommend.

Cheers,

The freebie hoses you get in the beginning are junk. The Respironics Performance and ResMed SlimLine tubing are the ones I use. The Slimeline is way overpriced on cpap.com though.

Hozer is what I use to keep the hose out of the way.

Simplest and cheapest solution to keeping your hose out of the way is to put a Command hook (available at walmart or similar type store) on the wall over the head of your bed. Use rubber bands or velcro strips (again walmart has them in packages of about half a dozen that work well) to attach your hose to the hook, leaving just enough hose length for you to move freely back and forth in the night. If you don't get it positioned just right the Command hooks can be moved without damaging your wall. You can also buy this https://www.cpap.com/productpage/HoseBu ... ystem.html from our host, a great company that deserves the business. Hope this helps.

Yes, you need some sort of hose management system. I use the Hose Buddy, but there are ingenious folks here that make their home-made contraptions that can work just as well. I've said this here until I'm blue... the Hose Buddy was the best cpap investment I've made. To me, there is no reason in the world why any cpap person would tolerate flitting with their hose all night while trying to sleep. Some do, but I wonder to myself.. why?? Prior to the Hose Buddy, everytime I turned, I had to reach up and straighten the hose or get it out of the way. The Hose Buddy, keeps the hose off you, while allowing to flip around like a pancake at the IHop... Just sayin'

If you feel your hose is too short, you can get a commector & another length of hose making a 12' hose instead of 6'. That's what I have done for 12 yrs with no problems. My bed is situated such that to use just a 6' would have me sleerping with my head hanging at the side of the bed, not comfortable.

Some RT's & DME's say extra hose is not necessary - that's crap, just get the connector & for more comfortable hosing, get 2 of the hoses mentioned above, that should totally solve your problem.

Any loss of pressure with the extra length in hose? Exhale relief still work the same?

I always wondered this with my Hozer unit. If it makes any difference if you hang the hose high.

I've been on CPAP 12 yrs & was put on the 12' hose after just a few nites and have used that set-up ever since. My hubby started CPAP yesterday & they set him up the same way. With our strange bed set-up we need enough hose to reach the bed, then have enough to move. Its not very comfortable to sleep with your head hanging over the side of the bed to get to the machine.

As far as my treatment being impaired, I've never experinced any problems. My dr is aware of this set-up and never had any problem with the use of two hoses. Only trouble I had is that heated hoses cannot be extended, so I have one heated hose connected with one regular hose that is wearing a hose cozy. I love the fact that with the heated hose I have no rain out. I wondered if I would since I only have 1/2 of my hose set-up heated. No problems yet.

Sheriff,
If you promise not to arrest me, I will admit to cuddling my hose (with a SnuggleHose cover on it) all night long and enjoying it . With my set-up I have never seen the need to get a hose management system. Whew! I feel a lot better getting that off of my chest .

Ok, as long as you have your drivers license, proof of insurance and registration... I can't imagine enjoying a hose that can and probably often does entangle you at night. That is just my opinion. Lots of folks "snuggle" up to the hose and enjoy it. For me, it was one more thing to mess with. I was sleeping so soundly, I would awaken with the hose under my body. Eventually, I yanked it until it ripped.

By the way... you look suspicious...let me see if you have any outstandings...

Are 12ft hoses legal in the District of Columbia?

I think about 3-4" is standard for Congressmen.

I got a slimline hose with my S9 and it wasn't cheap...

I too admit to snuggling with the hose.... keeping it close to my chest, keeps mask leaks at my chin under control.... I tried a hose buddy and it didn't work for me. It makes a nice rack for hanging my mask on in the morning.

I'd say 3-4 inches for a congressman is being generous....

Well....I'm a hose snuggler too. Cannot imagine having hose overhead (not possible with our bed anyway). I have a method of getting the hose nearest to my mask to stay put. I'd tell you but the sherriff might arrest me for my language.

Jen,
I was trying to ignore the quote from your post above (specifically the part that I bolded) but I am torn between and . Wow, it could really make the mind wander... Whew, is it getting really hot in here or is it just me? I better open the window and get some cool fresh air... .
