Is this ok?

Post by Joshaldo » Sun Dec 16, 2012 7:20 pm

The other night I had a few drinks and went to sleep with my s9 autoset. I woke up in the morning and checked the data on my SD card and I had one obstructive apnea lasting 90 secs. This is the longest one I think I have seen on my machine and it was at max pressure as well. I am just wondering should I be worried about an apnea that lasts this long and is the s9 strong enough?

Well, at least you have an idea how a few drinks affect your sleep and your OSA. Your S9 can provide a little more pressure than your pressure setting w/o actually setting the pressure higher, but obviously the pressure setting would have had to have been set higher to compensate for that particular 90 second apnea.

Sorry, when I said it was maxed out the machine was sitting on 20 and wouldn't go any higher.

In my opinion, it's not ok...

When I drink, my apnea worsens. I have decided to stop drinking. Case closed. Granted, I am not really a drinker, so I lose nothing, really. But, I gain better sleep; and it is quantifiable; I have the data.

Maybe you are not asking if drinking and Apnea are ok... well, at least you know my opinion. YMMV.

You don't mention your usual pressure ranges. If you consistently hit the max of 20 mark then you might want to think about the next step up in auto adjusting pressure machines that offer max of 25 cm pressure. In the S9 models that would be the S9 VPAP Auto.
If your normal pressures are above 15 every night anyway then the bilevel pressures available on the VPAP would probably offer more comfortable breathing against the pressures.
