Lying on side..air leakage

Post by SueKZ » Thu Dec 13, 2012 1:27 pm

Hi all,

I posted about a week ago for my husband who has yet to join this forum. I think when he gets more rested he will. He just changed masks from the ResMed Swift FX Nasal Pillows mask to the ResMed Quattro FX full face mask. He is a mouth breather, so this is helping. He is doing better on this than the Swift FX (thank God). Anyone have advice about air leakage when turning onto his side? That seems to be waking him up. You all have been very helpful and cannot thank you enough!!!!

Try different bed pillows; some work better with different masks, different people (trial and error)
Some pillows have cut-outs for the mask, so you can hang your face off the edge.
Sobakawa or buckwheat pillows can be molded to fit around the mask, disturbing it less.

Padacheek liners maybe? I never tried with my Quattro and switched back to the Swift FX nasal pillows.

I agree with both suggestions. Also, Padacheek has an antileak strap that seems to help a lot of people who use this mask.

All of the above. Padacheek liners help. In addition, I adjust my mask so the straps are slightly looser on the pillow side and tighter on the "up" side so that there's a little play if the mask gets pushed by the pillow (this only works if he lies on one side only, as I do).

The other thing is that I've learned to snuggle my face in the pillow to stem the leaks. That's the easiest thing to do so I don't really have to come fully awake to do it. I sleep with two pillows stacked one on top of the other and they are slightly staggered so that my mask hangs off the edge of the top pillow (which is one of those tempurpedic foam pillows). That way, the pillow isn't really pushing on the mask, but if I shift in my sleep and spring a leak, I just snuggle my face into the pillow.

I tried the Padacheek antileak strap, but I started to have a lot of jaw pain because I had to tighten that strap a lot to stop leaks. YMMV. My best strategy is tighten the lower straps a lot and leave the top somewhat loose. See my "Taming the Mirage Quattro" for ideas (FX is similar enough that these tips will work).

I can't get my strap tight enough. It either doesn't have enough velcro or it's too big for my head, but it has helped some.

By the way, if you press "ESC" using the Chrome browser, the aunt doesn't stop crawling around, but that does stop it with Internet Explorer.

It's kind of startling to see motion in a forum page, and then it just settles down to distracting. I've learned to adjust to personal styles, though, just another form of diversity *smile*.

Sobakawa or buckwheat pillows can be molded to fit around the mask, disturbing it less.

That's a good idea! I sent away for a latex cushion to cut up to make a cutaway pillow, but with buckwheat one could make the case the shape one wants, then just fill it with buckwheat, I suppose.

I'm a side sleeper, a little bit of a mouth breather at night.

I'll post my leak chart from last night when I get home. Very little mask leaks. I finally got everything dialed in. I always had mini spikes at times.

Hozer hose support to hang the hose, Contour cpap pillow with cutouts, nasal pillows and Respironics premium chinstrap at just the right tightness.
