Will Resmed Autoset let me know if I open my mouth?

Post by king_alvaro » Wed Nov 28, 2012 10:13 pm

I currently have a Resmed escape machine. This machine doesnt give me much information. I usually feel tired the next day. I been thinking probably I open my mouth during the night, but I don't know. I dont have a dry mouth when I wake up. If I get an autoset machine will it let me know if I open my mouth by seeing the leak graph.

Hi King A, the S9 Autoset will show you a leak number but doesn't show mask leak and mouth leak separately. Same with the leak graph in SleepyHead. But being able to look at your leak graphs can be helpful, showing you when leaks are occurring and how big they are. Allows you to work on improvements and check to see if your efforts are paying off.

The S9 Autoset has a "Mask Fit" icon on the display panel, but it only suggests "acceptable fit" (happy face) vs. "unacceptable." Not super helpful if you're trying to figure out how significant your leaks are. It was helpful for me to use my leak graph to see that when a leak happens my respiration graph goes jagged suggesting that leaks were affecting my sleep quality. Over time I was able to figure out that most of my leaks were indeed mouth opening leaks and I've now got mouth leaks down to zero most nights (by taping, but that's a whole 'nother thread!).

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a page 57 in the above document when I downloaded it. Can you please help locate this, sounds interesting. Maybe a typo on the page number, or a different document?

Thanks.

I found it pretty easy to tell when I had my mouth open. My leak jumped from below 12 (for a normal mask leak) to around 80. Before I got a full face mask, I used this to'MARK' when I wasawake, I simply opened my mouth, and then counted the spikes up to 80 in sleepyhead.

Yes, you can tell mouthleaks from the ResScan shape of the Leak graph.

Elarge the following graph. I can copy it to Microsoft Word and then zoom to 150%:

In my experience, one can have mouth leaks that register as very minimal on the leak graph, but are still disruptive to my sleep. Obviously you aren't having awakenings associated with mouth leaks, but it's possible you're having arousals that you aren't aware of due to mouth leaks.

Yes, sorry, don't know what happened there. The download must have stalled out and I looked at it before it was finished somehow...however it looked like it was all there, except it wasn't.

In any case, thanks for the reference, haven't seen this one before. Needed some more reading *smile*.

I agree you can probably get leaks that disturb your sleep that aren't obvious on the graphs. Leaks bad enough to cause your pressure to drop will probably show up. I also get very small mouth leaks sometimes that dry my mouth out, but probably don't show up on the graphs.
