Is there a YouTube video showing how to check the run hours on various models of CPAPs?
This would be cool to have out there.

More accessible; easier for non-techies to follow,
Video tutorials are more effective, and reach more people.

Be sure you look at "Run Hours." Press and hold "Setup and Info" then turn the knob to go to sleep report, press the knob, then scroll all the way down to "Run Hours."

I just got off the phone with Aetna and the rep says they rent to own. She also says it is customary for them to issue a machine with several hours on it but also says I wouldn't be out of place to ask for a new unit. She also said if it were to fail early before five years in any case they would cover a replacement machine. I still think I will ask for a new unit. I think I'll sleep even better.

Thanks.

I would demand a new machine. I can't imagine being given a machine with that many hours on it.

I Just figured out the hours on my new S9 Auto....and it had 250 hours on it when I bought it.... out of pocket (cash). That would be approximately a month. Is this standard? Thanks...

So a part of me is really angry that a DME would offer a machine as new when it is, in fact, used. A large part of me is pissed that a DME would sell the used machine as a new one for the same new price. Sounds kind of illegal too.

But, I regularly browse Craigslist and see machines being sold with "just a weeks" use. Clearly, the treatment isn't for everyone and we get the insurance companies to co-buy machines that are not used (in my case, there was no compulsory compliance term) and are being sold for profit? There is an S9 Autoset (allegedly) that the owner want 900 for stating "this unit new costs 1250 with humidifier...any bet is is an Auto Escape?

When I got my machine, I watched the RT cut open the box. It had the packing material. When I got home I used the clinicians manual (thanks pugsy) to look/modify some settings. I looked at the hours at that time too.

I agree with others that posted. C all the DME out on this and make them offer you a new machine.

I sure hope that's not standard! If your machine was sold to you as in "new" condition, they flat out lied!

I am a rookie with Aetna Choice PPO. Just received a verifiably new S9 (watched the technician unpack it from the box and take off all of the plastic, etc.

I have the climate control and the nasal pillows, having no problems to speak of except weight gain after 26 days on CPAP. The positive effects are tremendous!

SleepyHead says my AHI is down to 2.9 on average from 79.9 Supine during initial sleep study.

I do not see a claim on my Aetna web site for the CPAP machine at all. I am past my out of pocket limit for 2012 but still wondering if they will bill out ~$1100 to Aetna or if this is some sort of rental. How would I know?

Thanks

Hang onto all your paperwork, just in case.
Insurance commonly takes FOREVER to process anything that will cost them $.
They are hoping you lose your documentation so they can get away with crap. SOP.

I did just fine with my DME and RT. when I spoke to her on the phone and told her the hours on the machine, she immediately agreed and told me to bring it in to exchange it. Now, understanding its a rent to own like when you rent a car it may not have zero miles on it, the replacement unit had just 17 hours on it. If it was an outright purchase by either myself or insurance then I would have insisted on a zero hour machine. I'm satisfied and after reading some of the DME horror stories on here, I think I did excellent. My RT is very understanding.

As far as my first night, we set the range for 14 to 20. My observed cm in the middle of the night was just 14.1 and in the morning my AHI indicated 1.5. I think I'm off to a good start.

I think the solution here is to have your Doctor write the prescription for a, "NEW S9 ResMed AutoSet" or whatever machine you are prescribed. Guess I just learned to much here about some DME's and my personal experience! This will probably save some headaches in the future for anyone else reading this Post. The OP is happy with the low hour exchange and that's okay if they are comfortable with it. As for me I wouldn't have settled for anything less than a NEW machine as none of us can tell where a used machine came from, what the previous owners personal hygiene was like, were they smokers, drug users, was the house full of unclean cat litter boxes, rotten food etc. I'm sorry but I just don't think that the DME is going to disclose this type of information! I have read all of ResMed's items that can be sterilized and the CPAP machine was not on the list. I contacted them weeks ago about how to go about sterilizing a used machine and still haven't heard back from them. If you are given a used unit with a prescription written for NEW you have a legitimate claim for an immediate New machine. Also, our therapy is very important and we need to be as comfortable as possible for the best effective outcome. I couldn't imagine sucking in fumes from a previous owners house that I know nothing about. Aroma therapy may help hide the smell for a while but won't remove built up residues/odors from hours of use in an unsanitary environment. That sure wouldn't contribute to my therapy, just my strong opinion!

Actually, that would be a month of usage at eight hours a night. I just returned from my DME and mentioned this thread. The RT said that they will re-issue previous rentals which have less than 500 hours. Don't know if they sell them at the "new" price, or "refurbished" though.

DMEs very often swap out SD cards between machines as part of their normal process of reading the data. They should erase the old data, but don't count on it.

Be sure you're looking at Run hours on the S9 itself. You wouldn't be the first person to get confused because the SD card was old instead of the machine being old.
