do you unplug your machine

Post by Guest » Tue May 02, 2006 1:40 pm

I have a new remstar auto with Cflex. I'm curious, in the morning, do you unplug the unit or just leave it plugged in. Also, do you use the lighted button feature, or turn it off. Any adverse affects or wear and tear by leaving the unit plugged in 24/7?

I don't have a REMstar yet, although I will be buying one after the trial I'm on, but I always leave the machine plugged in during the day. The Brears PV10 I have has an annoying blinking light on it when it's powered but in the OFF mode.

I wouldn't worry, providing the machine isn't on it won't draw much power. The only possible danger is perhaps a power spike/power cut. That reminds me, I should make sure I have the machine on another surge protector!

Don't unplug your machine, particularly if you have one like the Pro 2 or Auto that records nightly statistics, if you do it'll drain the motherboard battery which stores the date and time.

I do have the buttons lit, but only use the on/off button....and I know where it is by feel. On the other hand, in case I WOULD need to look at the machine during the night, the buttons would be lit.

No adverse affects on wear and tear leaving it plugged in 24/7. (IMO)

Well, except for when I travel, mine has been plugged in since October, 2003, without any problems.

I also use the lighted button feature. However, my machine sits on the bottom shelf of a two-shelf bedside table, so the light is not intrusive.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to power down my lights and then leave it plugged. I notice the display panel gets a little warm with the lights on, so I figure it has to be better for the unit to be left unplugged.

A surge protector offers no protection from sudden loss of power, which is just as deadly to electronics as a surge can be. It also doesn't protect from line noise dips when other things on the circuit (e.g. fridge, furnace) kick on and cause a smaller dip. Those small dips happen hundreds of times a day and over time can cause as much damage as the one time spike/loss.

If you really want to get power protection, use a UPS instead of a surge protector.

I tried turning the lights off, but I found it difficult to hit the right buttons if I needed to turn it off in the night for a bathroom break, or to engage the ramp if I needed it to get back to sleep. So even though I prefer to sleep in total darkness, I am now sleeping with the little lights on. I often put a pillow between me and the unit so I won't see the light.

Lights on, power connected. Not a problem. And I have stopped using the ramp. Doesn't seem to be necessary for me, although I thoght it would be. Strange how things work out sometimes.

Just for another point of view

I have mine on a surge protector power strrip.

I turn it off during the day. I also make sure it is off when I either insert or remove the smartcard.

I 've had it almost 3 months - no prblems - no nothing. Keeps time - even adjusted for daylight savings...how did it know that?

Best,

Moogy, I think we're safe with the BiPAP-auto. It appears to have solid-state LED lights on it whereas the Remstar-auto appears to have incandescent. The lights in the BiPAP should consume very little power and also outlast the machine.

I leave mine plugged in 24/7.

Regards,
Bill
