i just started using a cpap recently. while i am not a mouth breather through the day, apparently i am a jaw dropper at night. i was fitted with the mirage for her by resmed with a chinstrap. i couldn't get a good seal and i was trying to pull the chinstrap over my mouth to keep air from puffing out. i am currently trying the swift fx for her by resmed (xs) and like how comfortable it is. i have had no issue with the pressure (15.0), but i am still having problems with my mouth. i wear a dental mouthguard for clenching. i tried frog tape (painter tape) with this gettup last night and poofed and drooled its seal. i haven't gotten any sleep. my md wanted a full mask for me but the order was unclear. do you think i will do better with a full mask (probably resmed quattro), or do you think there is more to try with the nasal pillows. i am at wits end. i am in the extra bedroom until i get used to this thing, and i would really like to return to our room.
Re: new user
Yes, try various full face masks because you're clearly not getting far the way things are... and when you find the right one in the right size for you it'll become as automatic to wear it as anything else (speaking from experience). I don't think much about it at all.
Re: new user
The key to avoid mouth blowouts is to learn to sleep with your tongue on the roof of your mouth--not as hard as it sounds. Practice ALL DAY. By keeping the tongue on the roof of your mouth unless eating or talking--then even if the jaw drops, the mouth is sealed off from the airway.

Re: new user
thanks for the advice. strangely enough, i already hold my tongue to the roof of my mouth. Always have. my guess it is me. I will have to give the ffm a try. i am sure i can get used to it...it's just the idea of the nose pillow was more appealling.
Re: new user
I tried a lot of approaches. The only thing that helped was micropore tape for me. (my face can take taping, though)
I have never found a FFM that fits me, unfortunately.

That's my story too -- FF masks either don't fit around my narrow jaw or they hurt the bridge of my nose. Like xney I use a nasal pillow mask and micropore tape with a little piece of fabric laid into the center to protect my lips. I make it easier to peel the tape off in the a.m. by using my regular moisturizing lotion after I wash my face. I also apply the tape to my forearm once and then peel it off before putting it on my face. Because my mouth really wants to open at night I also use a minimalist chinstrap (I think it's called the Sullivan), but now I don't have to cinch it up tight, it's rather loose and comfortable and acts more as a backup in case the tape comes loose.Xney wrote:I tried a lot of approaches. Welcome!
