OT: if you're in NYC and can help post-Hurricane Sandy

Post by jnmv1969 » Wed Oct 31, 2012 2:59 pm

Dear All,

If you're in NYC and can help a Hurricane Sandy victim who relies on a respirator to breathe and needs assistance with getting his marine batteries recharged, please check out the Facebook page below:

http://www.facebook.com/notes/amalle-du ... 3577505798

Note, his apartment is up 12 flights of stairs with no working elevator, so a person must be able to make such a climb. Also, car traffic in NYC has been limited, only cars that are HOV can cross the bridges. The requirement might be as high as 6 people per car.

I don't have any additional information, all of the details are included in the link above.

Sincerely,
Janet

Sounds like a catch-22.

Sounds like someone needs a relative or friend who lives at a lower level, then the resources to help Nick move. There are a lot of statements in the text that indicate to me that there is a lack of willingness to compromise. Unfortunately, in the situation that Nick finds himself, compromise may be necessary. I live nowhere near New York - certainly not near enough to take a battery home for 12-19 hours to recharge it. Otherwise I would be willing to help in some way.

I don't know Nick personally, but it does say in the FB page that moving would compromise his health. I think we have to trust that Nick knows his own health situation best and would probably be willing to be moved if it wouldn't jeopardize his health. I'm glad that you would be willing to help if you lived closer. That is kind and generous of you.

It is definitely a catch-22, but us New Yorkers have been pulling together in incredible ways to help each other. Where there's a will, there's a way, and we will use our "pushiness" to make sure that all in need get help in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. We may not always be polite, but we are incredibly friendly and super-helpful once you get past the surface. Thanks for your concern.

You just reminded me of being 23 and trying to navigate the NY subway after returning from Germany. After the homeless guy suggested a way that he and I could make a lot of money together... A gentleman turned to me and asked "Where are you trying to get to?" He got me on the right train and that was just what I needed.
Same experience in Boston.
Here in the heartland they pride themselves on waving to strangers on country roads, but don't seem to talk to or help anyone they don't know.
