Got my new APAP yesterday

Post by fredw » Fri Apr 28, 2006 6:26 pm

I got my new APAP and software from cpap.com yesterday. A Repironics with c-flex. I used it last night with the default 4 - 20 cm pressure range, and was surprized that I only got to 8 cm of pressure, and only left 4 cm of pressure for 1 out of 7 hours. MyEncore shows only 5 HSAs and 1 OSA. I did, however, wake up 5 or 6 times out of breath. I am not sure what to make of this. I was diagosed with OSA in Feb. 2002 and put on 9cm presure. in August 2004, I was upped to 12 cm, and a few weeks ago put on 10 cm. Unless I am convinced otherwise, I have reset my minimum pressure to 7 and will try that tonight. [/u]

fredw,

A minimum of 7cm is a wise move. If I were you I would also set the max to about 13 or 14cm. It's best to keep a fairly narrow range to reign in any erratic response caused by leaks or extraneous vibrations and the like.

Sounds like you are right on track!

Good Luck!
Sincerely,

Hi Fred,

So you saw something like this, maybe?

But you were expecting something more like this, maybe?

Hmm . . ., well I can tell you that my own apnea fluctuates more than enough to account for the sort of variations you describe. At 4 cm pressure a lot of folks talk about feeling suffocated because of a little higher CO2, so that could be part of it too. Your plan to set your minimum pressure to 7 cm would take care of that.

Apnea varies somewhat from night to night, a little more for some of us than others. Sounds like you're off to a good start though, Fred. Keep us informed. you might also consider the possibility of mouth breathing.

Regards,
Bill

I occasionally mouth breathe, but I only started when my pressure was raised to 12. Since my pressures should be lower, I anticipate it will stop. I also get the feeling that I started mouth breathing due to the exhalation pressure on my old CPAP and carried it forward when I inhaled. Since my new APAP has c-flex, that could help the situation if that was the case. I have to try to find that chart, I was looking at the data from MyEncore.

The CO2 buildup would explain why I woke up out of breathe, even though there was not an apnea to trigger a higher pressure.
