brenny:

what's the anxiety all about? cpap helped me get off the sleep meds. why do you need meds with cpap but not without? i'm not asking critically, but just so i can try to help.

maybe you need to do the meds with cpap and then come off them when you tolerate cpap better. but it would be a shame to stay on the meds with cpap when you weren't taking them without the cpap.

how about trying this: put on the mask and get it adjusted right and all. if you need to, drink a cup of hot cocoa made with real milk before that. then get into bed, mask and all and turn on machine. then, instead of thinking about being awake or wanting to go to sleep, think about wanting to get up out of bed. talk yourself into wanting to get up. if it becomes a real urge, tell yourself you'll get up in a little while. just keep telling yourself you'll get up in a little while. this exercise will help you go to sleep. if it doesn't, do meds.

sleep

Post by brenny » Wed Apr 26, 2006 10:59 am

I have not slept yet. I will try the hot cocoa and the mind game. I have an appt. tomarro so I will discuss meds. I am on anxiety meds already. I don't know if the apnea is making me have attacks or not. But I have a few lately. I just want to sleep.

Local lingo calls it "rainout" its water vapor condensing in you hose and/or mask.

Possible solutions:

1. lower the humidifier heat
2 raise the room temperature
3. use a hose cover: self made, or bought, also called "snuggle hose"
4. order the Australian heated hose from http://www.sleepzone.com.au

Doddie,

ozij perfectly spelled out the options to cure rainout. IMHO, you should try the snuggle cover first. It is a lot cheaper and simpler than the Aussie hose.

I had bad rainout because I keep the humidifier on the next to highest setting. The snuggle cover stopped the rainout in a bedroom which gets as cold as 62 F at night.

Good luck and keep us updated,

Usually I don't have any trouble sleeping. However, on the rare occasion I do have trouble I've developed a trick that works for me.

I turn on the TV to CNN Headline News but I turn the sound down to the absolute lowest where I can still hear it if I concentrate. It has to be as low as possible but you need to be able to understand the words if you strain to hear them.

Then, force yourself to concentrate on the words and think of nothing else. When i do this I'm usually asleep within 10 minutes.

It helps if you can turn down the picture so it's still dark in the room.

It can't hurt!

Thanks I will try it.
Maybe i need to stay up as late as possible, then i might sleep.
It's no fun lying there for hours.

did your doc give you pills? Have you tried any of our suggestions? With what results? Are you working on this or just whining about it? it's ok if you're just whining, but let's get clear which one it is.

ROTFL. It works! I did it for years when the best sleep I could get was sitting in a recliner half-awake most of the night. CNN Headline News is so monotonous, it's guaranteed to put you to sleep.

Your sleep idea

Jim Eads,
Hi. I tried to PM you but I can't get that area to let me log in. I'd sleep better tonight if instead of wondering I just asked you a question. I'm forever running into "small world" situations, but this would be way too much ---- did you have an Uncle Bud (Dolly) who had sleep disorders? Ok, now that I'm second guessing myself, I'll post before I chicken out.
