Could anybody identify this mask from pics? (For friend)

Post by hton » Sun Oct 21, 2012 9:26 am

G'day you all

I have been absent for a great while due to the fact that I am a complex combination of problems, resulting in visiting different hospitals is my new daytime job

However, as to my apnea problem, things are going well. Eventually, I have found this tremendously great doctor, and when I reported back that, even with the Resmed S9 and finally a good mask I was still tired to death, he immediately said 'then apnea is not your problem, it is a problem you also happen to have. He prescribed 'melatonine' as he suspected this stuff was upset in my body, et voila: I am no longer that tired anymore and am recovering gradually. So to share that with you as perhaps a useful tip: if you stay tired while faithfully wearing your mask, you might suffer from the same problem as me: melatonine.

If I may, I am now turning to you all to ask you if you could help me help out a friend. He has a mask, prescribed to him approx 4 years ago, which of course is worn out and should be replaced. The hospital says that mask is no longer available and he should take another mask they do have in stock. Which he doesn't want, because he has gone through the 'horrors' of finding a mask many years ago, and he now simply says 'they only have the cheap garbage masks that leak like h*ll, after a long search I finally found a mask that suits, so I want to keep that mask'. Now, the thing is: I know his hospital. I was an apnea patient there. And this hospital is in it for the money, and in it for the money only. They couldn't care less if a patient is treated, the less costs they have for masks and machines, the more profit they make out of their annual allowance for that patient. So, it might very well be that they have ditched the mask of my friend for something cheap, and are now trying to lure him into it.

Now here comes the problem: nowhere on the mask is a brand name or -type to be found. We've looked and looked and looked, but nothing. So I thought: if we upload the pics, perhaps somebody on this forum might recognize the mask and is able to identify it? That would help my friend buying a new one. Never change a winning team

I have uploaded the pics here:

On behalf of my friend, any help would be highly, highly, appreciated

Thank you and bye

It looks a lot like a Quattro, the older version with the head rest.

Is the cushion all silicone, or is there a gel or foam insides?
Is there any text printed or molded on the frame or headgear?

In a way the issue is moot -- if the replacement parts are no longer available, it's effectively useless and must be replaced. Not to mention it looks absolutely hideous and is probably a biohazard.

The mask looks + 20 years old and/or not a US model.

There must be some identifying marks on the mask shell or stamped into the cushion when it is disassembled. Otherwise it must be really, really old. Like the very beginning of Respironics old.

Check the new masks out on the market. Most are not that horrible and something should fit your friend. Start with the Quattro line or read through the dozens of FF mask recommendations made on this site from users. They have some great info on their experiences.

Good luck.

normally the maker & model are on the headgear label unless it has been removed or the headgear modified
the mask & cushion normal have the size and possibly an emblem

Thank you all for your replies and my apologies for not responding any sooner: I was in the hospital once again; the doctors tell me I am a scientific question mark (tell me about, my wife has told me that for years ).

I would gladly answer that if I would know how to spot the difference (I am not technical, they more or less all feel the same to me).
Is there any text printed or molded on the frame or headgear?
No, nada, nothing, niente, njet. Not even 'made in china'

No, nothing, nothing stamped anywhere. It is completely blank.

You and I know he could also check for another mask, but he remembers the horrors of trying to find a mask way back then, and he is reluctant to go through that road again.
