New to the CPAP world

Post by RippersVF2 » Thu Oct 18, 2012 6:14 pm

Newbie here just was diagnosed with severe apnea. I had my second sleep study done and my pressure will be a 10. My Dr was very helpful and informative. I have to say I think having a positive attitude about treatment is crucial. I went in both times with a great attitude and actually enjoyed the full face mask. Took me a little bit to fall asleep but once I did I didn't wake up till the morning. My Dr wrote me a script for a S9 autoset with humidifier and a quattro fx mask, so now I am just waiting for the insurance approvals. I really can't wait to use it and finally get some good sleep!
This forum is an awesome resource!

Welcome!
I'm a newbie myself having started cpap almost a month ago. My pressure is very similar to yours at 9. I haven't gotten any relief yet and will be getting an Apap tomorrow night since the S9 Elite doesn't seem to be helping my frequent awakenings. Good luck to you!

Welcome to the forum.

The S9 AutoSet is a great machine. You will like it I am sure. If you stick around here you will see discussions about software and monitoring your own therapy results. Your S9 Autoset is a full data machine and there is software available that you can use.

There is ResScan which is the software that DMEs and doctors use. Windows based software..if you are using a Mac you will need virtual Windows installed.
You can find it here in UncleBob's signature line
memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=38643

There is a video that explains how to use it here
http://montfordhouse.com/cpap/resscan_tutorial/

A video that explains the S9 features here

There is another software that will work with the S9 and it has a Mac version available. SleepyHead...new and still in Beta and a few little bugs but you might like some of the stuff it offers. I have information about it in my signature line.

First thing I did was turn off the epr. It just didn't feel good, I like the feeling of air all the time. Mask fit good after a few adjustments. It took a while to fall a sleep but once I did I think I only woke up once, and that was because my mouth was dry. I had the humidity set at 3 and all night it just used about an 1/8th of an inch of water, so tonight I will turn it up. Overall not a bad first night.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Welcome, and good to see you're already making the machine work for you! Stick with it, the therapy does work, and gets even easier over time.

Well i have been at it for a little over two months and am getting used to it now. The first month was a little difficult, but I knew I had to stick with it. My biggest complaint is just mask adjustment. The Quattro FX works but it had its good and bad days. I think I will try a regular Quattro for maybe the new Wisp when it comes out and a chin strap. The best nights sleep I that I have had so far, believe it or not, was at the sleep center. The first month or so I could only use it for about 4 hours and now I have no trouble using it all night long.
My machine was originally set for 10 which I have now moved up a little to 10.5, seems to work better. I also tried setting in autoset with a min of 9 and a max of 13. That night my pressure seemed to have stayed up around 12.8 so the next night i increased it to 15 just to see and there were a few times that it maxed out on that too. Looking at the data my pressure goes up right after a start my machine even if i am awake and just laying there it goes up between 11 and 14, does that sound right? I thought in auto mode the pressure would stay low unless it was needed?
Anyway, my AHI is below 2 in both modes so should i just keep it on straight CPAP? What would you do?
This forum is by far the best resource for information and i thank everyone that take the time to contribute. If you are new and reading this, my advice is to stick with the treatment and don't be afraid to try new things and techniques

The machine will have false readings while you are awake because we tend to hold our breath when we roll over, adjust blankets, etc. Can you look at your graphs to see what it did all night long? Do you feel better with one way as opposed to the other way. Some people prefer apap, and some people are bothered by it.

Last night I set it back to 10.5 and had a really good night, AHI of 1.1, so I think I will leave it at that. I woke this morning feeling well rested.
Happy New Year!
