ResScan, Sleepyhead, or both?
ResScan, Sleepyhead, or both?
Hello everyone,
I'm a new member, but I've been a regular reader of this forum since being diagnosed with Apnea and getting my first cpap several months ago.
I'd like to be more involved in my treatment and learning what works best for me. I've been reading about the ResScan and Sleepyhead softwares that many of you around here use. What is the difference between the two? Which one should I use? Or do you recommend using both?
I'm so glad I found this forum. I've learned so much already - thank you!

Re: ResScan, Sleepyhead, or both?
Pros and cons to either.
ResScan is of course the official software but it is big bloated slow piece of software and for some people difficult to manage.
Tutorial here
http://montfordhouse.com/cpap/resscan_tutorial/
SleepyHead stuff is in my signature so take a look there at the links I have.
I would suggest you try both and see which one you like the best.
I use both. SleepyHead primarily but I have ResScan available and keep it current with downloads every 5 days or so.
ResScan is so slow I can start to open it.....and it takes forever just to open...so then go to SleepyHead while ResScan is thinking...do my download with SleepyHead and take a look at my report...and then go back to ResScan and it will just be opening up so I can choose my profile and that part is slow...then finally get profile up so I can do a download and that takes another minute.
SleepyHead is Beta software and there are a few bugs with some of the calculations. Not the main ones like AHI and event duration but in some of the others.
If you want to try SleepyHead and have Vista or Windows 7 computer here's a hint to save a little headache.
When you get ready to install from the set up files instead of doing the usual double click of the mouse to start the install do a right click of the mouse and from the menu that pops up choose "run as administrator" and let the install proceed. This saves a headache when SleepyHead does an update...so far only update.
There's no reason why you can't use both if you want.

Thank you, Pugsy. I'll do as you suggest and try both. I just printed out the userguides for both and I'll download the software when I get home tonight.
I've been a little intimidated looking at the images I see posted on here so I'm hoping reading them is easier than it looks!

Re: ResScan, Sleepyhead, or both?
I use both sleepyhead & ResScan on the mac . ResScan is used with VMFusion 5.01 & win 7.2 .It has 8 mgs of ram. It's not slow at all. I recently increased the ram and everything speeded up.

Re: ResScan, Sleepyhead, or both?
Win 7 64 bit dual processor laptop with 8 GB RAM and only the Encore and ResScan softwares are turtle speed for me. Don't think I can add more RAM but even if I could I wouldn't want to bother with the expense just for something I use for a few minutes once or twice a week.Bobby269 wrote: ResScan is used with VMFusion 5.01 & win 7.2 .It has 8 mgs of ram. ResScan 4.1 is a bit speedier than the older versions but still won't win any races when compared to SleepyHead.

Watch the video Pugsy posted. I printed the Resscan userguide too but have never used it. Another tip on ResScan, don't bother with the REPORT function. It's a waste of time and paper and harder to read.Bon Bon wrote:Thank you, Pugsy. I'll do as you suggest and try both. I started with ResScan and while it's slower, it does what I need. I have SH too but don't use it much. It just depends on which one you prefer. Like Pugsy, I keep them both updated with my data.

Re: ResScan, Sleepyhead, or both?
I like the red line for leak in ResScan...since I sometimes get up there and with SleepyHead I can't always see that magic 24 L/min number. Gives me a little quicker reference for time frame near or above large leak since I mainly eyeball it anyway.
I have used SleepyHead since it was in the baby Alpha stages so long time of experience with it and I didn't use ResScan until I got my VPAP earlier this year.
So I have a lot more experience with SleepyHead and just more comfortable with it from past use.
I just haven't had the need to spend the time with ResScan to get more experience with it.
SleepyHead is Beta software so it is a little buggy but the other stuff outweighs the minor bugs and all software has to go through the growing pains.
ResScan isn't perfect either. I have yet to have it not give me at least one "not responding" message and not long ago it said I didn't have any detailed data for 3 days in a row (and the detailed data was plainly showing on SleepyHead so I know it was there) and then on the 4th day the previous 3 days MIA detailed data just showed up in ResScan.
I do think that for those people who are computer challenged that SleepyHead would probably be easier to use starting out.
Though despite what Avi123 days about me pushing SleepyHead...I really don't care what software someone wants to use...just as long as they use something.

Re: ResScan, Sleepyhead, or both?
The really nice thing i like about sleephead is the way it calculates your best trend and displays it along with the settings you used. Very valuable to newbies and those monitoring there therapy. No need to write stuff down or search through reports and do things manually.

I didn't get the chance to download the software last night so it will be a project for this weekend.
Oh, and I need to remember to put an SD card in the machine tonight.

Re: ResScan, Sleepyhead, or both?
I've been using both. I have a laptop running Win7 64bit on an Intel P5 chip with 8 gig memory. ResScan takes a long time to initialize and load, especially the "detailed" data. SleepyHead on the other hand is far quicker.
I like aspects of both softwares. I like the way, in SH, I can peruse detailed graphs quickly and "see" trends on graphs. I also like the more refined and dare I say more professional graphs in ResScan. Just my humble opinion.

Re: ResScan, Sleepyhead, or both?
You know, I haven't checked my data on ResScan in so long, I just realized I don't have it on my newly upgrade Windows 7 (64-bit) machine. What version do I need? Anyone have a link they could PM me?
Also, I have a Resmed S8 Autoset II, which is NOT compatible with Sleepyhead, right?
Thanks.
