Empty stomach and AHI

Post by SolSionnach » Sat Oct 06, 2012 2:19 pm

Hello all!
My AHIs have been running below 1 for a couple weeks, yay me! I'd been having up to 12 centrals/night, and lowering my minimum pressure from 6 to 5, and using the Swift FX exclusively made a huge difference for me.

I decided to forgo a bedtime snack for a couple of nights, and it went up to 2±... and most of the difference was in centrals
Last night I snacked - AHI back below 1 again... 2 OAs and one central... even though my nose was stuffy.

Has anyone else noticed anything like this? I'm going to snack again tonight, then Sunday I'll try a fast after 6 pm again.
I would like to be able to do that, to help lose this extra 20 lbs. I'm lugging around.

Thanks!

Hi SolSionnach!

For me, AHI seems to relate to those things which cause inflammation - such as stress, processed or rich food, too little sleep, not enough sun.

For me Clear Airway Apneas (I have only CPAP data to work with - and no chest strap) seem to be related to those things which cause breathing instability, such as stress, too much violent TV, high simple carb foods, too little exercise (I need my aerobics and interval training), stimulants, too high a CPAP pressure, weight loss (note: if you loose weight you will likely need to lower your pressure - do keep an eye out for signs of unstable breathing - I am more afraid of unstable breathing than I am of AHI!), and recent colder weather. Breathing stability looks at breathing like a controlled system - inputs from O2 and CO2 sensors are multiplied by how much your central nervous system is activated (think someone fearful - breathing rate goes up up) to produce breathing drive ("gain"). If the "gain" is above one - the breathing becomes unstable and takes off - causing arousals and the body often bringing things to a pause (the Clear Airway Apnea). On the other hand flow patterns tagged as Clear Airway Apneas may relate more to simply not needing to breath so often as the machine would like to see. As I get in better shape I see more of this.

When you snack you run your body through many metabolic changes which are particular to you and what you ate. I think your experimentation is great but do open up your eyes to the many, many other things going on in your day and environment which may also feed into your data that particular night.

Myself, I am trying to move my night snacks toward veggies, indeed, I think they are a good path in general toward weight loss. I try to make half of what I eat in a day veggies (all colors of the rainbow).

Sounds like you are doing great!

Have a lot of fun!

Changing AHI from 1 to 2 isn't a significant change, and might just be sampling variation. What is your 95% pressure level? That's the number you should be comparing against your AHI.

I wouldn't sweat an AHI of 1 or 2 - unless you aren't feeling rested. They're good results for most people!

Could it depend on what you're eating to snack with? If you eat something spicy or acidic, you could produce GERD while asleep that could wake you up without your not necessarily realizing what woke you...

Late night snacks kick my AM blood sugar up.
They also tend to promote aerophagia and reflux--(for me).
Not a good thing for me to do; but, more nachos for the rest of you guys. Enjoy!

Hmmm, my experience is just the opposite. If my stomach is empty at bedtime I tend to sleep very well, with low AHI... and on the other hand if my stomach has food in it, I experience a higher AHI, more tossing and turning, plus some indigestion/aerophagia. Different strokes, I guess. Keep us updated on your test results.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

No one mentioned drinks.

Ive given up caffeine, alcohol, and milk. All three can make a difference for different reasons.

The only thing i can think of is your glucose level is plunging, and its affecting your CNS- perhaps the food gets
you into deeper sleeping cycles or something.
