Aromatherapy
Ugh, it's the first full month of autumn and I've already caught my first cold of the season.
Besides Eucalyptus (which I add to my humidifier water), does anyone have a preferred DIY aromatherapy oil?

When in doubt, open the case. Remember: If you can't open it, you don't own it!

Re: Aromatherapy
IMHO I would not add anything to my water tank. A good way to add scents to your cpap is putting a few drops of essential oil on a cotton ball and place the cotton ball near the intake of the machine (take care to protect any furniture from the oil).
I use and highly recommend Pur-Sleep. But it will work with any essential oil.

Re: Aromatherapy
I recommend "clear" by Pur-Sleep.com. It helps my allergies by decongesting my nose. Just contact http://www.Pur-sleep.com. They ship QUICK! You can get samples to try pretty inexpensive, but I swear by "Clear" and buy a large bottle every few months. Put on a wafer they see at Pur-Sleep, and sit it at the air intake area of my APAP, and keeps me happy most of the night being able to breathe.
BY the way, putting ANY oil IN your humidifier water is a very bad idea. Sitting a wafer with the oil next to air intake area is MUCH safer for your health.

Re: Aromatherapy
OK, so now I'm curious about the whole in-the-water vs by-the-intake thing.
As long as I'm emptying and cleaning the tank each morning, wouldn't putting the oil in the tank be better for the machine than putting the oil near the intake? Unless you're pouring an entire bottle in, the amount of liquid oil shouldn't be anywhere near enough to cause lipid pneumonia.
I am not a chemist, but...
If you consider the path that the vaporized oil has to take, placing it at the intake means that most of the oil molecules will get caught in the filter, then coat the plastic within the blower, then get semi-emulsified with the water vapor in the humidifier, then coat the tubing before making it to the mask. Of course, while it's making the trip, the bioactive parts of the oil are merrily denaturing along the way.
Placing the oil in the water, on the other hand, means that although the heat will denature them more quickly, the bioactive parts will have a shorter path to take since they only have to travel through the tubing.

Re: Aromatherapy
By putting the oil on a cotton ball or pad near the air intake does not move the particles into the machine....its just the aroma that goes into the machine. If you put oil in the humidifier it then moves into your hose and into your lungs because its trapped in the humidity...not recommended. Try a test....put a drop of your oil on your hand and then keep sniffing it...you will see that its the aroma that clears your sinuses. Now you know why its called "aroma" therapy .

Re: Aromatherapy
I don't understand the molecular science - but I rather have the machine coated with oil molecules than my lungs!

Re: Aromatherapy
essential oils compromise the plastic materials. I have a filter on my mask and am going to use a drop of essential oil on the filter. I use doTerra oils. They are the purest and they have several suggestions for colds etc. Their "on guard" mix guarantees killing 99% of germs. You could also use it in a diffuser in your bedroom. I also use "clear". I am a newbie and definitely don't have many answers but love my oils.

Re: Aromatherapy
I bought the starter set--3 full size scents and 10 samples.
I haven't even tried them all yet.
Some I like better than I thought I would. YUM!
The little bags are too small for the pads, so get some 2"X3" bags in the bead aisle of a hobby store.
You can always use the tiny bags for something else.

Re: Aromatherapy
I too am into DoTerra Oils. And while it is not recommended to add the oils to the rubber area of the mask, I add it to the rubber nose part of the hose: it is also how I keep it clean. I did this prior to using DoTerra Oils. B4 Doterra oils, I used Eucalyptus oil & Melaleuca Oil (Melaleuca oil cleans the rubber area of the hose & disinfects it, with each use). The rubber area of the hose is still in good shape & my husband wondered how I was cleaning the hose. I had been getting re-occuring pink eye, prior to using Melaleuca (AKA: Tea Tree Oil).
I use one drop of Breathe & One drop of Wintergreen in my water, as it seems more efficient. I can open my water container & clean it out if I need to. The other one I had previous, I couldn't do that with. I've heard of people getting off their CPAP machines after using the Doterra Oils, not sure: however they may of used an emulsifier. I wish I knew what they did to get off their breathing machines. However, this is what I do.
