Vaseline & Nasal Pillows: not a good idea
Intranasal Vaseline
The reason intranasal vaseline is dangerous is because it can result in "lipoid pneumonia":

Make sure you read the end of the article where it says treatment is supportive. That means once you get it, you're stuck with it.

Nope, You're Wrong
Course, you could use one of the accepted alternatives, like Rhinaris:

SAGWhy can’t I use Vaseline instead of Rhinaris to soothe my dry nose?
Vaseline should not be used to treat nasal dryness. It may immobilize the cilia; small hairs that help the nose get rid of foreign material and clean the incoming air, thereby impeding the function of the nose. As well, if small particles of Vaseline are inhaled from the nose, they may deposit in the lungs and lead to a condition called lipid pneumonia. Rhinaris should be used instead since it is a water-based product and so does not pose the risk of lipid pneumonia and will not immobilize the cilia.
In Case You Still Don't Believe It
Then we could always refer to the Mayo Clinic:
Mayo Clinic and Lipid Pneumonia
Hey, do what you want. But you got two things working against you, daily usage and a driving pressure source that makes deposition of petrolatum even more likely.
Make sure you guess right, cause fibrotic lung changes are irreversible.

Oh, and BTW

NOBODY passing an NG tube uses vaseline, go ahead and Google NG tube and lubricant, and every one will come up with "water-soluble lubricant."ThStoddard wrote:Strange, when I was a kid and hospitalized they needed to stick a tube in my nose and down to my stomach. And what did they use to lube the tube before putting it in my nose? You guessed it, petroleum jelly.

At least, I sincerely hope he wasn't.Aspiration pneumonia. Not likely with a water based lubricant. If an oil based lube is used and the person breathes some into their lungs, that person will develop a pneumonia and it will be very difficult to treat.

I personally prefer the saline gels (for reasons I've posted elsewhere) but didn't personally think there was anything wrong with vaseline in the nose or for use with nasal pillows.
But the articles were pretty compelling and from multiple, reputable sources. I think the main concern I drew from the articles as it relates to vaseline with CPAP is the potential for problems with long-term use.
So I think this character was just posting a different point of view and was providing sources so we could make up our own minds. No need to dismiss it out of hand.

What about Baby Oil?
Is baby oil a viable alternative for lubricating nasal pillows? Or does it have the same inherent dangers as vaseline? I'm not sure about the chemical composition of baby oil, so maybe the experts on this board can chime in.
Thanks!
