little sleep

Post by metallicstar » Sat Sep 15, 2012 10:51 pm

It seems like when I go to bed and eventually fall asleep with my mask on I wake up about 2-3 hours later and am wide awake like Ive slept peacefully. Have any of you guys done this while transitioning into wearing a mask? I feel like I get a good long power nap and am up for hours till I finally get tired again.

It sometimes happens early on in xPAP therapy. I'd just get up and do a few light things, such as read a bit, until you get tired again. You may start to just sleep longer and longer over time.

I remember a few nights waking up and staring at the ceiling. I was dumb - I should have just turned it off and gone and read a book. Training myself to lay there awake is not a good thing.

It's also possible there's something else going on, there's some people who naturally sleep in a split night if they're getting good sleep.

Something else to check is general sleep hygiene, make sure it's good.

It happened to me too. The very first night at home, I woke up after 4 1/2 hours, got up, took my mask off, and then looked at my clock and realized it was nowhere near time to get up. I was very confused.

I think what happens is that we are so used to poor quality sleep. A few hours of cpap sleep is comparable to a full not of non-cpap sleep, so our brain thinks we had a full night. After it adjusts to that, then it realizes it has been deprived and wants more! So, many people start sleeping more to make up for previously being cheated out of good sleep.

Eventually, it settles down.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Got through that by cheating...I used Ambien for the first week to get acclimated to sleeping with CPAP. That did work, aside from the first night after I stopped using it not being a heavy sleeping night *smile*. Don't know how many people that would work for, though. I do agree that if what you're describing happened to me, I'd most likely get up and do some stuff that normally makes me sleepy, and then go back to bed when I was feeling good and sleepy again. And that you will get through this...give it a little time.

Be careful. Insurance may deny you coverage if you don't use it for more than 4 hours a night. They love to spring this on you without warning after a few months.

---and watch out for rounding;
If your display shows 4.0, it may roll back to 3.9 on the official report--not good enough!.
Best to go for 6.0, at least--it's better all around.
Barely compliant is just cheating yourself.

You could always have something by your bed like a book or the TV so you can keep the mask on and still be compliant.

I get up and read for a bit and the cat gets some lap-time. Then I go back to sleep when I feel tired.

I had trouble early on in that I couldn't trust the mask not to leak, which made me not want to go to sleep. Fixed after I switched to a different mask which doesn't get pushed around as easily and isn't as prone to leaking.
