Update : New bed, new numbers, new results

Post by aevans410 » Fri Sep 07, 2012 4:29 am

Over labor day weekend, the wife and I went and looked at beds. We kind of balked at the price of new high quality beds, but she had heard good things about TempurPedic, so we shopped a bit.

The high pressure salesman (who wasn't high pressure for long after I started to walk out of the store) put us on a Tempurpedic cloud luxe first (which is understandable. it was 3700 dollars) but it was too soft (my wife had back surgery about 8 years ago). She fell in love with the Cloud Supreme though (I wasn't in love with the price tag, but they offered 0 percent financing for 5 years, so what the heck).

The bed was delivered Monday, and here is what I have so far :

No more low back pain.
AHIs of 3.1, 2.8, 1.9, 1.1.
2 nights sleeping from the time my head hit the pillow to the time the alarm went off, and 2 nights where I woke once, went right back to sleep.
The urge to urinate 4 or 5 times a night is totally gone.

My wife who couldn't sleep in our bedroom due to so much back pain has had 4 full nights of sleep. She hasn't had 4 full nights of sleep in years.

Things are looking up

I did the same as you. Once I got my apnea treatment under control, I thought it would be great to replace my worn-out bed. I bought a Temperpedic and I have slept great ever since. Some folks don't like the Temperpedic and for some, the bed is too "hot" because it retains the heat. The aches and pains I used to wake up with are gone. My whole family takes naps on my bed and I am reluctantly going to have to get them one. Oh well, you spend almost one third of your life in bed, so you might as well get a good one. Less attention to our bed "hygiene" probably aided in the apnea getting out of control anyway.

Sheriff

PS: if you like bed, you may consider the Contour cpap pillow. Take a look at it on cpap.com. I can't live without mine.

That's almost a better result than CPAP. Good job.

your old bed - what kind of bed and how old was it?

I was looking years back and tried the temps bed but could not afford the price, but i know people who have them and they all love them.
Instead i purchased a memory foam from costco for around $800 (king size). Its been ok for about 6 years but now there are craters where our bodies sleep so the memory foam has stopped coming back. There was a 10 year warrantee on the bed but i can't track down the manufacturer or my receipt.
I know people who have returned sleep number beds. Mostly because after paying lots of money and when the beds arrive they get physically sick, they realize that they paid for an air pocket with a pump and some cheap foam blocks which they must assemble. I guess there is a reason you don't see the inside of a sleepnumber mattress at any sleep number store.

Good luck with your new bed.

Interesting!

After 33 days on my auto-CPAP, I'm sleeping through the night most nights. Also, I'm moving around less. This is leading to a sore back whenI get up! For me, it is mid -back that is sore. It works itself out within 10 minutes, but it is something I never had before.

What is the expected lifetime of a mattress and box spring these days? I'm guessing mine is 8-10 years old. It is a Sealy Posturpedic with pillow top.

My first bit of relief from back, hip & shoulder pain was with a TempurPedic mattress topper. When I later got a twin size TempurPedic bed it was another step in pain relief. I was unable to bring it with me when I moved across country, so for the past year I'm back to my sleep being frequently disrupted to shift positions for pain relief. If the opportunity ever presents itself again and I can manage it, I will get another one.

I've a bad back, one surgery down, many to go. We bought a solid latex mattress a few years ago, very expensive, very heavy, NOT hot, BEST thing we've ever bought. Granddaughter loves to sleep over, especially after being in her dorm room bed!

We have a Sealy memory foam, which was $399 at Big Lots, less 20% because we waited until we had the discount.
It's been quite nice for 2 years, and so far no signs of deterioration.

Dr. Oz had a bunch of things to say about sleep, including recommending a mattress pad.

4. Temperature Regulating Mattress Pad - These are so effective says Dr. Oz that Nassa uses the same technology. It’s called OUTLAST Technology. The mattress pad temperatures changes as your body temp changes, so it helps you to stay cool for a better sleep in a cool environment. Dr. Oz is giving away 1000 of these cooling mattress pads as well today, so go sign up for Oz’s Million Dollar You, NOW!

Actually from recommendations about losing weight.

and then I discover I can not afford it.

My old bed was used when we got it, and we got it 6 years ago. Its like a 2 inch foam mattress (non memory foam) with a box spring.

AHI of 1.3 last night. Still looking good.

Take it back to Costco and they will replace it.
No receipt required.
My BIL works at Costco and he tell about the stuff people return.
Pressure washers used once to prep the house for painting, BBQ used all summer then returned in the fall.

Really interesting...Bed price's are out the roof..A little tip...All bed's are built by several company's.here in North Carolina there alot of smaller shop's that build bed's for the big name's..I drive&work local for a LTL company. So I go in alot of bed company's delivering part's..I had been looking for a bed for a while..I like'd the double pillow top'd mattress's..More firm for me..Alot of the smaller company's will sell to the public & yes they are 100% American Made..I bought a Queen double pillow top ,box spring's & basic frame for $ 500 ..30 yr warranty on mattress..That is under half of what you would have paid wholesale...just a little tip that everyone really need's to know...Don't buy from box store's when can go right to the place..

It was shipped to me compressed in a shrink wrap tarp. Now its a full size monster and weighs about 150lbs. The trouble is it was be very difficult to move and i don't have a vehicle to move it. I have been rotating it but now i may just flip it over, its comes with a removable cover that has a pillow top part to it, but i'm affraid that if i remove it i will never get it back on, its fits so snug.

It always amazes me how you can return anything in America. Havnt they started doing that with cars now? you can buy and car and return it within 30 days?
Where i came from if you buy something you can't return take it back unless its defective.

As far as Costco goes I have heard that if you return to many items they refuse your membership at renewal time.

How do these match up to the "Select Comfort" ? I've had one of these for years. Still not sure I've got my # dialed in correctly...

Oh, King size and I sleep in it alone (if that matters) - two controllers.
