Finally got me auto flex hum, with hc431 mask

Post by wannabesleep » Wed Apr 19, 2006 7:55 pm

Hi all.
Well, my new nighttime hope has arrived. I ordered the REMstar Pro 2 C-Flex CPAP, REMstar Heated Humidifier And HC 431 mask. So far today, one brief nap. The mask did not scare me off, but I've noticed a few things and have a few questions.

1. The HC 431, has what seems to be two port holes near where the tubing is fastened. This has air blowing from it, is this normal, or are these holes to be closed off?

2. Just playing a little, I relaxed my neck muscles and "fake" snored, the pressure steadily built from 4.0-9.0 over about 5 minutes. My machine is preset for 4.0-20, is this a good setting to start with? I really noticed the pressure building up inside the mask when it hit 9.0. Does the pressure automatically reduce back down if the user's breathing resistance falls back down, or does it just stay high once it goes high?

3. Any tips on where to position this tube when sleeping. I prefer my side at night and do turn a few times.

4. I'm thinking to pop a dose of xanax for my first night, as I know the idea of having a fighter jet mask attached to my face might prevent me from relaxing, is this a good idea?

5. Any other tips, advise little secrets for success are greatly appreciated.

For the past 3 years, I've averaged 4-5 hours of sleep per night and those 4-5 hours are broken up. It's been, a good 15 years or better since I remember laying down, falling asleep and waking up when it is morning. If I can achieve this goal just a few times per week, this will all be worth it.

Good choice on equiptment.

1. The two holes in the mask just above where the tubing hooks on are vent holes so you can breath with the machine not working, when the machine is under pressure and you are wearing the mask, two flaps inside should seal them off. (No Leak)

2. The Pro 2 is a CPAP not a APAP, It is set at one pressure, when running it can be read in the machine window.

Tip, don't over tighten the mask. Make friends with it, use it every night 7 or more hours, and enjoy good sleep. Jim

With the F&P 431, and the machine turned ON and the mask ON my face, I get [NO AIR] coming out of the two holes in the swivel.

With the mask on your face, and the hose un-hooked air comes in and out those two holes, to aid in breathing, however not all CO2 is exchanged, so it's not good to do for long periods.

Inside the swivel are two flappers that close off the two holes when the mask is pressurized.

From what you are telling me it appears your mask has defect. Maybe some one else that has the mask can check their's.

I have two 431's and both leak air, not much, from the valves on the swivel hose connection. They did that from the first day so I don't think its a defective valve or mask. Its not a problem because xpaps compensate for leaks anyway. Its no different that the CO2 vent holes in the mask.

Jim, I know nothing about this mask, but is it possible wannabeasleep is referring to "vents for exhaust"? Where are they located on this ff mask?

The main vents on the 431, are a bunch of small holes at the top of the bridge of the nose on the mask, the two he is talking about are just below the elbow and above the hose connector. they are designed to be open when the machine isn't providing air. It looks like mine is the only one made correctly, not that it matters the machine probably gives enough extra to cover that leak too. Mine just seals the holes 100%, some must not, anyway my F & P 431 uses about 10% more air than the Comfortfull.

I tried 16 CM the last two nights, I dropped it to 15 CM tonight, My AHI went up more at 16.

I'm confused. You say you have the Remstar Pro 2 which is a CPAP only machine, but you describe APAP operation.

Did you mean to say you have the Remstar Auto? or does the Pro 2 now support APAP?

Your not alone in the working correctly category mine does not leak any air out of the two holes in the elbow.
Because it is so new you should ask for a replacement.
