How long to try CPAP without humidifier
How long to try CPAP without humidifier
I just got my first own CPAP NHS supplied Sleepcube Standard. I have UARS and a pressure of 10. I asked for a humidifier the second day on CPAP but the clinic said to wait, as I should get used to it. Its 2 weeks now and I wake like clockwork with bone dry mouth, and dry sinus etc. I do mouth breathe quite a lot due to congestion. How long should I give it as they dont seem to want to give them out easily? Thanks
Re: How long to try CPAP without humidifier
You have waited long enough. Push for the humidifier. It will probably help with the congestion as well as other dry symptoms. When the nasal mucosa get too dry they swell up trying to retain moisture.

I know that this will start an argument...but...I think this is what we can expect under obama's national healthcare.skippydoo wrote:I just got my first own CPAP NHS supplied Sleepcube Standard. Push for the humidifier and keep asking. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

That is complete rubbish. there is no reason for you to "get used to it'.

Talk to your Dr ... And have him tell them you need it, they should listen to the Dr, but your just a patient ... That probably already paid for it! (Or why would they not want to SELL you one?)

Uhm dry nose, etc. are the reasons you get a humidifier. Why would you have to wait??

I assume OP is Brit or Canadian, or thereabouts. We Yanks are not the only ones here.
The coverage is sketchy, but better than none at all--as it is here, you still have to fight for what you NEED.

England or somewhere in the UK I would imagine. Pretty much the most basic of bare bones machines.skippydoo wrote: NHS supplied Sleepcube Standard.
In the US market, this exact same device is referred to as the DeVilbiss IntelliPAP Standard CPAP
http://www.eu-pap.co.uk/sleepcube-standard-cpap.html
£275.00 for machine and £150.00 for the optional humidifier.
NHS doesn't want to spend anymore than they have to so they try to get people to use the machine without humidifier.

Re: How long to try CPAP without humidifier
I don't know about the UK or the rest of Canada but in Ontario a humidifier is "standard" issue when a cpap is prescribed. I was diagnosed in 2002 and a humidifier just came with the setup, along with tubing and a mask. For the first machine anyway, we in Ontario get some Provincial Government assistance for the "Package" - machine with filters, power cord, humidifier and mask. We have to pay the rest ourselves, unless a person has an "Extended Health Care" plan that could cover all or part of the rest of the cost.
