Time for a new machine

Post by Sleeprider » Wed Aug 08, 2012 8:39 pm

I began using my Remstar APAP with C-Flex and humidifier in early 2008. It is now approaching 13,400 hours and Apria is contacting me that I'm qualified for a replacement soon. I use the APAP features, and have a 10 minute ramp from 7.0 with settings of 9.0-13.5 with a 90% pressure at 10.6 and AHI of 2.0. It's working okay, and the only complaint other than it is a bit noisy, is that since I started using 64 bit Windows 7, I haven't used the data feature. Although I never really obsessed over it, the data does help get things optimized.

Based on my first experience in getting a machine, I need to get educated in what is available for the replacement. I'd like it to be quiet and to have easy access to data. Other than that, the APAP and humidifier should be no problem to continue in the replacement. I also use a heated Aussie hose, and after four years, it's probably due to be renewed, but it has worked flawlessly all this time combined with the Respironics Swift LT mask.

It's been a while since I've been on the forum. Nice to see many of the old regulars still helping out. I owe some of my success in adapting to CPAP and being comfortable with my equipment to your invaluable help, and have tried to pass on some of my experience to others.

Philips Respironics System One 60 Series Auto CPAP machine. if you want to stick with Respironics, but none of your old parts will work with it.

It's fully data capable, is capable of using a heated hose.

The ResMed S9 AutoSet is roughly equivalent. Avoid the S9 Escape Auto.

Either one is fine. I wouldn't bother with any of the other choices.

I got the pr system one auto apap a couple of weeks ago and love it. First thing that it is so quiet. I love the way the humidifier installs and it is easy to clean. If you have
a problem with rain out, it has a feature to stop it. It also uses a lot less water than my old 7 yo Remstar.

I have had the opportunity to use and own both the Respironics..PR S1 and M series and the ResMed S9 models of machines.
Pretty much a toss up which I like best. Each has some minor pros and cons. They both do a great job. Go about it a bit differently but the end result is the same. There may be a few people who do better with one algorithm over another but I think most people can adjust to either comfortably.

The other brands I am like archangle and I wouldn't consider them. Not from effectiveness point though because I am sure they do a great job but more from the data available from the machine or software point. I either don't like the software or I am missing a data point that I might want to see like the wave form breathing flow. The F & P software is a royal PITA (makes Encore Pro look like a piece of cake) to install and you have to get a special code from F & P to go beyond a 30 days trial. The Devilbiss doesn't offer wave form and what they do offer on their software reports I don't like the way it is presented.

EPR on the ResMed machines is different from the Flex exhale relief on the Respironics machines but it is just different and not uncomfortable by any means. Both are quite comfortable in their own way.

If you want Encore software that will install easily on your Win 7 64 bit computer...send me a private note. I can get you fixed up with the latest and it will also work with the new PR S1 60 series machine (should you go that way) as well as your current machine. It won't work with Skinners tool though.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like the PR1 or S9 should work just fine. Pugsy, I'll send a long a PM.
