What happened to my central apnea?

When I look at various posts and tutorials I always see central apnea as one of the possible events in chart legends. Yet when I use my ResMed or SH s/w central apnea is nowhere to be found in any report, chart, or display. Is there some s/w or machine "switch" that is not turned on?

If no centrals are flagged then they won't show up on the software. I have had SleepyHead reports where I had only one obstructive apnea and the only thing that shows up is the one obstructive apnea (in the pie chart and event graph). No centrals.

That said. There have been some reported instances of the ResMed S9 machines getting stuck reporting the same thing day after day. Can be all or part of the data that gets stuck. The fix is to unplug the machine from the electric source and wait a minute or two and plug it back in. This forces the machine to do sort of a reboot of the firmware just like we reboot a computer sometimes to clear out cobwebs. It hurts nothing to try it. It won't fix things retroactively though. Have to wait after another sleep session to see if it changes anything.

So while it is possible that you simply aren't having any centrals to get flagged, it is a bit odd to have repeated nights with not even one.

There is no special switch to change or adjustment that you can make to "turn on" central flagging. It either flags them or it doesn't.

If you mean ResScan when you say Resmed, then one way to verify it is to ask in ResScan for Stats for a period such as one, 7, 30 days like these:

What's your total AHI rate? Not everyone gets any CAs, even bogus ones.

I do agree to do the unplug power cycle before bed one night every once in a while.

Yes I did mean ResScan. In your table to the right of AHI & AI ( event/hr) There is Apnea Index, with 3 different apneas list just below:Central, Obstructive, Unknown: I don't have these in my table.

I suspect that the ResScan 4.1 is at fault here. I tried the ResScan 4.1 by downloading it on top of the 3.16. But it gave me problems by skipping downloading the graphs data (not the Stats) from the SD Cards taken from my S9 Autoset and into the ResScan 4.1 via the USB, in my Laptop with Windows 7. So I went back to the 3.16 and those graphs data are back. It's worth a try. Also see Roger's post here:

Another thought. Assuming that you tried to unplug and replug the machine from the wall. Then Run your S9 VPAP in CPAP mode at 11 to 12 cm (corrected) pressure while you're awake or napping for half an hour to an hour. If there is no Central Apnea in the machine screen then your power supply or the machine is most likely defective.
