S9 AutoSet vs. PRS1 Auto Hands On Comparison

Post by archangle » Sun Jul 29, 2012 3:30 pm

Some time back, an S9 AutoSet showed up on my local Craigslist at a sufficiently low price, and I bought it. I promised to write a comparison with the PRS1 Auto that I already had.

The gist of the comparison is not really all that exciting. Neither one has a significant clear advantage in my opinion.

The S9 therapy feels a bit more comfortable, but not dramatically so. Subjectively, it feels “smoother” somehow. I'm using EPR=3. I'm experimenting with Auto pressure settings, and have used 14-20 through 18-20.

The S9 seems to auto up to a higher pressure than the PRS1.

The S9 shows a few less apneas, but I don't have many on the PRS1. I also realize that different machines don't measure apneas the same.

The S9 humidity chamber is a little harder for me to see the water level in when filling it. Mine came with the never to be sufficiently damned disposable water tank. I figured out how to open it for cleaning, but I also bought a cleanable tank. (Curse you ResMed for the disposable tank.)

I like the auto on/off function on the S9.

I did not get a climateline hose. Rainout hasn't been much of a problem for me on either machine.

I like the S9 a bit better, but not enormously so. I wouldn't pay the difference in price online.

The S9 seems “slicker.” The PRS1 seems a little bit more clunky but seems more solid.

Thank you for a well written evaluation. I have not tried both machines, and I often wonder if I should have the Resmed instead of the PR System Auto.

I'm suprised you like the auto on/off on the S9. I have been a bit envious of the separate settings on the PRS1. I like auto on, but not auto off. I want to hear it blowing if I take the mask off. Other than that I think the top mount hose swivel would be a plus. Probably not enough to give up the color LCD screen though.
So Arch, Are you going to give ResScan a try and tell us what you think?

I DO wish they had separate auto on and auto off settings. Or at least a way to do auto on and NOT do auto off. It seems really stupid to deny you the option of auto on if you don't want auto off. Auto off does make me a little nervous that the machine might decide to shut off when I don't want it to.

However, once I decided to risk it, the auto off function is very convenient. I take off the mask and the machine shuts off rapidly. The PRS1 runs a minute or so before shutting off. If you want auto off, S9 is a clear winner.

I've used ResScan and still prefer SleepyHead. Some of that may be simple familiarity with SH. I do like ResScan much better than Encore.

For my setup in terms of where the machine sits, the rear mount hose isn't much of a problem.

Not big different at all

The S9 seems to auto up to a higher pressure than the PRS1.
It could be, cause the s9 algorithm drop the pressure after last apneas after 40min so maybe in this case the device deliver more pressure that PRS1

The S9 shows a few less apneas, but I don't have many on the PRS1. I also realize that different machines don't measure apneas the same.
It could be cause a better algorithm that S9 have

The S9 humidity chamber is a little harder for me to see the water level in when filling it. Mine came with the never to be sufficiently damned disposable water tank. I figured out how to open it for cleaning, but I also bought a cleanable tank. (Curse you ResMed for the disposable tank.)
Yea this is a little problem to see on yellow table the level of water, and you have to watch up to no watch this yellow table if you use reusable chamber

I like the auto on/off function on the S9.
Good, function but better is to unplug, cause when you use on/off function the power supply stay on power

I did not get a climateline hose. Rainout hasn't been much of a problem for me on either machine.

You have to in mind also that the s9 have slimline tube, can unswer stand the central apneas, have big screen,

The S9 seems “slicker.” The PRS1 seems a little bit more clunky but seems more solid.

Size:

The S9 looks smaller, but when you actually compare them, they're very close in size.

Mechanical feel:

The PRS1 feels more solid. Or "clunky" if you think of it that way. It feels like it would take more abuse.

I like the auto on/off. Put mask on, hook up hose, take 2 deep breaths and get under the covers. In the mornings, I just disconnect the hose and it blows for a few seconds before turning off.

The H5i humidifier water chamber is so-so design. The dish-washer compatible chamber has a slightly different level marker then the non-compatible chamber (which can't be pulled apart). The drain hole in the far right corner also leaves water behind inside when you go to drain it. Biggest issue for me was figuring out places to put my fingers so I could put it into the machine without spilling the contents.
