I was prescribed an S9, need to make choices?

Post by AHI15 » Wed Jul 25, 2012 7:08 pm

Hi:

I have my script for an "S9" CPAP machine. My doc. wants it set to a range of 6-11. Since my AHI is not severe and I nose breathe, I think they hope I can use a nose plug "mask."

But I see from the ResMed www site that there are sub-models.

Which one should I get?

All I know at this point is I want a "fully data capable machine."

I think all of this S9 series qualifies, right? Are there any sub-models I should NOT consider?

Ugh, I have to choose a mask too, right? Also, I tend to sleep on my side, so I have to be able to deal with that.

Thanks for comments that might steer me more quickly to a decision. I need to get treated pronto, as I am at the end of my rope--just too tired to function anymore.

The fact that your doctor writes a pressure range means auto adjusting pressure machine...APAP.
ResMed makes 2 APAPs.

S9 Escape Auto and the S9 Autoset.

The Escape auto offers extremely limited data...only shows AHI only and pressure averages. No AHI breakdown, no leak, nothing else.. So this is a machine to avoid since it doesn't offer full data.

The AutoSet does offer all the full data that we talk about. This is the one your want.

The names are plainly stated on the top of the machines.

Ask the doctor to specify the type of machine on the script , S9 AutoSet - pressure range 6-11 and dispense as written
just make sure it say AutoSet next to stop/start button and you don,t want Escape Auto

Yes, The S9 Autoset is the machine you want. You can get a free download of the ResScan program here so you can read your data off the SD card that's in the back-side of the S9 Autoset. You definitely want to see your data to know how you are doing with treatment... and you have the right to see your data.
Also highly recommend the nasal pillow headgear called Opus 360. See the link below to see what it looks like and read about the features. If you click on the photo you can see it from different angles.
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/fisher ... -Mask.html
Others like the Swift FX. If you move around alot, and are a side sleeper, the FX may not work well for you... But this is my opinion and experience only. For many it works well. It's light weight but the nasal pillows rest against the upper lip. I would always sweat where they touched my skin. The Opus 360 only touches the underside of the nose and does not rest on the upper lip. The hose that comes with it can be used as shown or can be un-clipped. It can swivel 360 degrees.
Make sure you get a 30 day exchange policy from the DME so that what ever headgear you start out with can be exchanged if you have trouble with the fit and/or leaks. Each person's face is shaped different. What works great for me may not work well for you.
Hope this helps. Please ask all the questions you can here, visit the Newbie thread, and Wiki. There is a lot of information there for you. The best thing you can do for yourself is to read, get well informed, and be your own advocate.
Best wishes,
Cindy

I concur with the other posters here. Get an S9 Autoset, and don't let the DME rep talk you into anything less.

Yeah! Thanks for this. That settles it huh? Now I needn't spend hours reading the models not even knowing what the point is.

This place is great!

Escape from any model with "escape" in its name. Just run away!

Those models should be banned by any sane medical professionals. They aren't cheaper to make so why are they cheaper to buy?

Just wanted to add.
Seems like some DMEs will tell people that the Escape Auto will offer all the data that is needed. Well, it might be all the data that is needed by them but it isn't all the data that is available on other machines that the patient may want.
Don't know if they will try to pawn off the Escape Auto on you but it has been known to happen. They say "see that SD card in the back...it gathers all the data you need or there is"?
It does gather data...just not all the data that the AutoSet gathers.

Ok, so far I called Apria Healthcare and told them my script says "S9 auto" and that I specifically want a "S9 Autoset". To which they responded "that should be no problem."

So they want me to come in and provide my prescription (which I will make a photocopy of b4 I hand it over, just in case I need to get my PCP or dentist to re-write it) and also they need my insurance info to "get the ball rolling."

So far, so good. I'll go see them during their "walk-in clinic" hours tomorrow morning.

Thanks for the helpful tips.

I know it might be a little extra out of pocket (depending on your insurance), but in the couple weeks since switching over from the respironics system one to the S9, I'd suggest adding the climateline hose. YMMV, but I've been more comfortable with the climateline than the straight humidifer on the respironics, and my numbers are better despite the pressure not changing.

Anyone else had a similar experience with the climateline?

Provide the copy to the DME. KEEP the original for yourself!
(advice from my doctor and his RT)

Ok, dropped off script today. They copied it, and gave me back the original. After I had copied it.

I wrote on their copy "S9 Autoset" to clarify. They didn't seem to have any disagreement with the idea that this would be the machine they would supply, since in their mind it is the one that has the smart card, which the Dr. specified on the script.

Now I wait. I feel very good about taking each step toward getting treatment. It has been a slow process. I may be able to meet their respiratory therapist Monday or Tuesday.

Double check BEFORE you sign for any machine from them that it is the Autoset and not the Escape Auto. We've seen too many instances where they try a bait and switch at the last minute.

Yes, even if the Rx is written as DAW "S9 Autoset", you'll still run into the clueless (or malicious) DMEs who think the S9 Escape Auto is an acceptable substitute.

I had to wait an extra week for them to order a real S9 Autoset as I refused to sign anything or take the S9 Escape Auto home. I was far more impressed with the therapist who showed me the machine this week then the one from last week as well.
