I've been reading theses post wile waiting for my machine, which i got on Friday. The first night i did about 4 hours the second night i did over 12. I THOUGHT i was one of the lucky ones and every thing just fell into place. Not true, but i have hope my second night left me so refreshed tha i was able to get up and cook a full course meal something i havent done in months. My problem is on the fourth night i discover my mouth is opening. I hear the noise and feel the air as it's passing out of my mouth. This morning one of my famous headaches is back unrelieved by 800 of motrin and my throat is sore. My humidifier is set on 2.5 and i havent had any dry nose issues. The therapist who fitted me for my Swift FX nasal pillows said if I was a mouth breather when she was setting me up i would be breathing through my mouth????? . Any suggestions or responses will be appreciated.

Re: waking up with a headache
Setting the humidifier higher helped with my dry mouth. I'm not sure if I was breathing through my mouth before or if setting it higher made it so I stopped breathing through my mouth, but it definitely helped the dryness.

Welcome to the forum.
Lots of different things to try to help limit mouth breathing and the first and probably simplest would be to try some sort of chin strap. You can buy any number of specifically made chin straps but I would try a homemade one first to see how it goes before spending money on a store bought chin strap. If you have an ace bandage wrap that will support your chin and allow for a little tension to help keep mouth shut that would be an inexpensive homemade chin strap. A wide stretchy headband is another. Needs to be wider than an inch though...and those are hard to find.
If you do a forum search for homemade chin straps you will find a ton of ideas.

I may have to RISE but I refuse to SHINE.
Re: waking up with a headache
BTW..the morning headache may have been related to untreated apnea events if your mouth breathing is significant enough to allow for a loss of therapy pressure.

Re: waking up with a headache
I agree with a previous poster that the headaches may indicate loss of therapy. Before I was diagnosed and fitted with a machine many years ago, I woke up almost every morning with headache. My original sleep doctor told me that this was due to my almost constant lack of sufficient oxygen and a buildup of CO2 and of CO in my system. All this disappeared after even my first nigh with my original old Healthdyne CPAP.
