Really would like more info. on Clear Airway Apnea

Post by Chuck Connors » Fri Jun 22, 2012 10:36 pm

I plan to be an excellent student on Clear Airway Apnea, since it's the most troublesome number that I have. It's my understanding that the medical community still doesn't know enough about it.

For the last 11 days, I've had the following numbers:

Hypopnea 3.03 / 2.68 / 1.18 / 1.43 / 1.50 / 1.66 / 1.05 / 2.43 / 1.25 / 2.09 / 1.58
Apnea 0.00 / 0.00 / 0.00 / 1.04 / 0.34 / 0.00 / 0.18 / 0.00 / 0.00 / 0.19 / 0.00
Obstructive Apnea 2.55 / 1.52 / 3.55 / 0.52 / 1.16 / 2.29 / 1.66 / 1.87 / 0.65 / 0.19 / 0.89
Clear Airway Apnea-11.88 / 6.77 / 1.97 / 5.08 / 6.33 / 3.71 / 9.41 / 5.48 / 11.13 / 3.86 / 5.16
Number of Clear Airway Apnea EVENTS: 98 / 58 / 10 / 39 / 93 / 47 / 153 / 79 / 187 / 61 / 75
95% Leaks 8.40 / 6.00 / 7.20 / 51.06 / 37.20 / 12.00 / 22.80 / 13.20 / 14.40 / 22.80 /14.40

My sleep doctor classified my Central Apnea as moderate and gave me his professional opinion that I'm "being treated." He told me not to worry about the Centrals. After dragging my a-- today at work, I was keenly interested in looking at the numbers from last night. The Clear Airway apnea events are spread throughout the night every night and some are in clusters. I'm religious about getting 7 1/2 to 8 hours of sleep each night, but I don't feel as well rested as I should be. Any insight and input is appreciated.

Thanks. -Chuck-

Be sure to look at the airflow waveforms. Many of the things my PRS1 show as "CA" are not that scary once you look at how long they last and how complete they are.

Some people DO have really bad centrals, just not me.

Hi Chuck.
I too had about two thirds centrals and one third OA with the S9 Resmed Auto. My AHI was around 12-15 and my doctor also said that I was being "treated"
I am in Australia, so our system is a bit different to yours. I was very frustrated and made a lot of noise. Wrote emails to everyone associated with the Chest Clinic whos email address I could find, and also to the Health Minister in the government. I finally was heard and trialled on an VPAP SV machine which treats complex sleep apnea. The trial went well with my AHI below 3 everyday. The doctor finally admitted that I needed an ASV machine and because I am on a low income the government here permanently loans a machine to the patient free of charge.
After all this time, I am finally on the road to recovery, I feel alive for the first time in years! My AHI is consistently below 2 with sometimes even below 1. Which is very exciting for me
So if your numbers are high, make noise, until you get properly treated. Good Luck!

Chuck, I used to think that using the machine 100% of sleep time was enough. Now I believe there is at least one other component- good quality sleep. You are sleeping long enough, but if you are not getting quality restorative sleep you won't be at your best. Chronic pain & restless leg syndrome are two of the causes of fragmented sleep often called alpha intrusions. As tedious as it is a review and inplimentation of good sleep hygiene may be in order. Zeo may be of help here. With the 30 day guartntee you can try it for 3 weeks and send it back and get a refund. There are also apps for smartphones which may be of use. Also if I am reading your numbers correctly your total AHI seems to be high with a fair number of centrals I asked my doctor for a sleep test with a trial of ASV and had some improvement so I am using that machine now. Still AHI varies in the teens, but that's better than my six month average of 28 on mu Auto 25. Good luck. I have no monetary or oter connection with ZEO.

Thank you for the replies. I plan to study the Sleepyhead Guide in detail so that I can understand the airflow waveforms and the other charts & graphs. As for restless leg syndrome (RLS), that has crossed my mind, as I do get that occasionally. I understand that a Magnesium supplement helps with the RLS and I've been using that when the symptoms appear. -Chuck-
