Dropped 20 lbs apnea numbers have improved.

Post by rottyjohn » Wed Jun 20, 2012 7:51 pm

Hello All,

Since 1 Jan I have dropped over 20 lbs mostly due to eating smarter (fewer calories and less meat) and getting serious about my cycling program. I have noticed a couple of things with my apnea numbers. They have consisently decreased to below 3 formally they were around 4 or 5. I also dropped my APAP pressure from 13 - 20 to 11-20. Average nightly pressure is around 12. I am really feeling good too. Blood pressure is down to what I consider normal for me 120/60. I hope all this continues. Curious if anyone has seen similar effects from weight loss and regular exercise?

Thanks,
John

I haven't seen any difference but then I haven't lost any weight..not all that big to start with..my BP is still borderline sometimes but at least not all the time so I can squeak by without BP meds.

I am very happy that you have seen some improvement with your weight loss though. I know it is hard work and you have earned the right to be proud. Congratulations on your success...pardon me while I go see if I can wash some of the pea green envy color off my face now.

John,

This is fantastic. I dare you to drop another 20.

I have lost quite a bit over the past 18 months. My OSA has cleared up, but I had RERA breathing (UARS) hiding behind the scenes, so I haven't been able to reduce the pressure. I do know that getting on CPAP has made it possible for me to lose weight.

What kind of cycling do you do? I am planning to buy a bike, hopefully yet this week. That will be my first time owning a bike in 29 years. I am looking at the Trek FX 7.5 and the Specialized Sirrus Elite. We are blessed with an amazing bike trail system here in Minneapolis, and I look forward to exploring every one of them.

thanks Pugsy! i am quite proud. You are certainly a big part of my CPAP success. Thanks.

Don't know about 20 more but 5 more down to 175 would sure be nice pretty sure haven't weighed that in 20 yrs or more?

jweeks I ride a modified Rans VRex. Older recumbent bike... yes one of those weird ones with the feet up in the air. Kooky but I love it so easy on my back. Can ride all day long with no seat or back pain. Good luck and be careful i ride always on road side you will have so much fun riding on bike trails! Avoiding car traffic is such a good thing. A good friend of mine had a Specialized Road bike and absolutely loved it. I suspect your looking at mountain or hybrid type?

thanks,
john

Congrats! I'm glad your pressure needs have dropped with weight loss.

My experience is just the opposite--I've lost about 45 pounds since January and my average pressure has increased from 10.5 to 11.5. But I also have the physical issues of small throat/airway so losing weight is probably just letting my aging muscles/skin sag even more.

Oh well! I'm married to my APAP for life and am grateful for it.

I lost a lot of weight and my pressure went from 9 down to 5. If I lose the last 30 I'm hoping I can try stopping the machine since my pressure is so low. Dr. said I can try but I think I still do better with the machine than without it.

Well done.

I dropped 50lb and went from average pressure of around 15 to now around 10.

I feel much better.

Once I was on CPAP, exercise became much easier. Also I was less desperate for carbs, caffine and sugar, which presumably my sleep deprived body used to depend on to keep going.
