just before waking up for the day
just before waking up for the day
It is common to have a bunch of events just before waking up - I have the alarm set for 7 am, and I sleep right up until the alarm wakes me up on most days - and I am noticing that I have a whole bunch of events in that last 45 or so before the alarm goes off every morning - nothing else is going on in the room - the wife is sleeping soundly next to me so it is not her getting out of bed and causing anything.

Re: just before waking up for the day
I see those pre awake clusters of events myself from time to time fairly regularly. I think that the body does some transition between awake and semi awake and sleep prior to full awake time. I think that we just simply don't remember being sort of semi awake or awake since it is common for people not to remember every awakening. Sometimes I remember and sometimes I don't. I totally discount anything I see near the beginning of the night and near the time I wake up because I have seen the same sort of stuff when I know for sure I am awake...like last months cluster in the middle of the night when I know I was awake with extreme nausea but did not remove mask. Did you see that example? If not I will send it too you.DoriC wrote:So...can you explain why that happens?

Yes, I remember seeing that report. Actually it even happens to "normal" people like myself. I can remember this morning transitioning between sleep and awakening, not actually asleep but not really awake either, it went on for quite awhile.

Re: just before waking up for the day
I don't know why some of my awake time has some event scoring and some of the time I know I am awake and I have no events scored. I can only assume that my breathing is more erratic (at times) than I realize for some reason and the machine gets fooled. I think we have talked about my "restless" nights also. I see more events overall when I have "restless" nights most often due to back pain and general comfort issues. Totally unrelated to sleep apnea. It stands to reason that sporadic elevated (not huge but compared to periods of time with zero) events during those nights could also be the machine being "fooled" if I happen to be semi awake and not remember some of those specific times.DoriC wrote: Actually it even happens to "normal" people like myself. During my period of extreme nausea I know my breathing was erratic because I was concentrating on breathing to reduce the nausea so that I don't throw up. Trick I learned when pregnant and had extreme nausea and vomiting 24/7 until about 5 months along. I don't handle nausea well at all.

It makes sense.
And would explain some odd stuff.
Thank goodness it wasn't aliens.

ok - ya, and it is at those end of the night areas that I normally get the lusters of either obstructive or open area events - normally between 10-20 events, just back to back lasting over several minutes - that is the only place I ever see those - so it could be just the transition from asleep to semi awake, so that clears things up - probably just best to ignore those and move on.

Ive noticed the same over here, as well. And from a scientific point of view, that is rather interesting.

Re: just before waking up for the day
Almost every one of my graphs shows quite a few events the first 30 minutes and the last 30 minutes.
I always am up at 6 usually waking at 5:30. My alarms are set for 6:30 and 7 and most days I am at my PC working by then. I have concluded (no science here just seat of the pants SWAG) that the events during these times are anomalies. I wish there was a way in Sleepyhead to mark them as "disregard" same as the leaks when I sometimes take my mask off to make a potty run (now thankfully only occurring every now and then! Thank you CPAP! Do I hear a "New Feature Suggestion" for SH? hmmmmm

Re: just before waking up for the day
If you actually take the mask off...turn the machine off and when you come back to bed turn it back on and you will have a break in therapy...in SH you can choose to ignore short sessions and you can choose the definition of short session.Tino2You wrote:I wish there was a way in Sleepyhead to mark them as "disregard" same as the leaks when I sometimes take my mask off to make a potty run (now thankfully only occurring every now and then! It is a setting available in preferences.
Can't do much about the others though...sleep onset or right at awake time but you can use the slider function to highlight the times after the sleep onset cluster and prior to the awake cluster to get a rough idea what the AHI would have been without those time frames.
Highlight only the time in between and on the AHI graph...the AHI will change to just figure that time frame. It is the AHI number that is right above the AHI graph. Have you seen it? If you don't understand what I am talking about just let me know and I will try to get some screen shots.

Re: just before waking up for the day
Dori, I see that others have answered your question. To recap... the transition from normal breathing to sleep breathing involves several anomalies. The machine doesn't track if you are awake or asleep, so it just flags the anomalies. These transitions can also happen when you wake and have some lag in falling asleep.

I can try. Don't know if I can capture them so that they are easily seen and I don't have many where I have events and the beginning and ending of the night on the same night.DoriC wrote:Can we have some screen shots please?
Give me a bit to do some playing with screen shots.
