Question about cleaning water tank

Post by fourkatz » Wed Jun 06, 2012 1:29 pm

Happy day, everyone!
I'm a newbie (since Jan. 1), with various questions coming up.

I clean my water tank, filter, and nasal pillows every morning - it just takes a couple of minutes.

Question is about the water tank. (Yes, I only use distilled water!) I've been washing it with a sponge, and a drop or two of dishwashing liquid. Is it safe to soak it in a sinkful of suds? I've been hesitant because of the metal plate on the bottom, so have avoided soaking it. And before you ask, no - NOT in a dishwasher - I don't even have one. I'd simply like to soak it in suds in the sink for 10 minutes.

Is this safe?

Thanks!

Why wash it every day when you are using distilled water. Secondly....the sponge, do you know how many bacteria live in those things. I only wash mine when I think of it, maybe every couple of months, distilled water and vinegar, let it soak for abit, rinse with distilled and allow to dry. water to vinegar 3 to 1.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

Why not wash it every day? I like to empty the leftover water from the previous night, and put in fresh water every night.
If some guru decided we only really needed to brush our teeth once a week, would we all stop brushing daily? I wouldn't!! To each his own.

I agree with Nanwilson, and by the way, if we only put distilled water in our mouth and sealed it! Yup, I'd only brush once every couple of months. Smarty pants That's me.

I wash the mask every other day now but I have two.
If you don't wash the mask often, it will absorb oils faster and not last as long. Others say if you wash it too often, the soap will decrease its flexibility.

If I use tap water, I rinse my tank every day but I broke a clip so now I'm using distilled water but I run it low and then clean it out.

Sponges are odd things. If they are new, they are full of toxic things (see the back "not for use in Aquariums") Used ones tend to have lots of dead bacteria in them if they dry out and lots of live bacteria if they stay damp. If my tank feels slimy, I wipe it with a sponge that has a cloth like thing and lots of dish soap. I then rinse it and let it air dry.

Maybe 3 or 4 times a year. Headgear every couple of months. Using fleece strap covers and alternating them helps.

Back to your original question...

It is safe to soak the humidifier in soapy water for 10 minutes.

I happen to think it is wonderful to take a proactive stance on cleaning things.

You're supposed to clean these things?

I wipe the nose pillow off every other day or so with a wet wipe, use distilled water in the tank and fill it when its empty (about every third day), I did rinse the hose out once.

But then again, I am in the George Carlin camp when it comes to germs and immunities, I like to keep mine in tip top shape by exposing them to a variety of threats, nothing like a well trained army defending my borders

While it is fun to live life on the edge, some of us are more efficient at building immunity than others...

I'll see your lack of xPAP cleaning, and raise you with projectile diarrhea from the grandchildren...
