Who has felt absolutely fabulous after sleep Study titration

Post by glad to be hosed » Fri May 25, 2012 12:20 pm

Maybe it's just me, but the morning and day after the second sleep study where they did the titration I could have swam the English Channel. Okay not quite but almost. How many have had this experience? Just wondering if something is amiss here OR since the techs where manipulating the mask and air pressure that I had a night free of breathing disturbances. I asked the tech if he gave me any oxygen and said "No". But I keep wondering since I have not been able to duplicate a night like that. Does this sound familiar to anyone else.
Have a great Holiday weekend.

I was surprised when they woke me up. It seemed like only minutes since I lay down--but it had been hours.
Time passes diffeerently when you are not conscious half the night.
--And I did NOT have a headache, plus, I didn't feel like I'd run the marathon all night. That was a surprise.
A good one.
Not fabulous--but beginning to feel HUMAN! A huge improvement.
I still felt sort of crappy for weeks after--probably the 'sleep debt' I had accumulated for so many years.

Welcome to the forum.

I felt like I had been hit by a train after my titration study. Anything would have been an improvement over that night.
Long story and won't go into it.

Please click on the link to the machine that you have chosen in your profile and look to see if that looks like your machine.
What you have chosen was discontinued long, long ago but Respironics uses the term "Remstar" on every model since the dawn of creation. Highly confusing.

Unless you are using an old machine given to you by a friend it is unlikely that a DME would have supplied that machine.

I would assume your machine looks like this one.
https://www.cpap.com/cpap-machine/respi ... cflex.html and if it is indeed the PR System One Plus CPAP with CFlex then you have a machine that offers no useful data.
Please read this. http://maskarrayed.wordpress.com/ which explains about full data and hours of use only data and what to do when you realize that is what you have.

There is software available for full data machines. Checkout my signature line for links to software options.
It may not be important to you but it would be to me and just thought you might want to know.

For final clarification as to model if you aren't sure there is a stick on the bottom of the blower unit that has a number like DS 150 or 250 or 450 or 550. Only the DS 450 and 550 models offer full efficacy data.

Hi There
1) I felt strange in the sleep lab.
2) It was broken sleep as they woke me to tell me I had Apnea and we selected a mask.
3) Once the mask was on and she left to adjust the pressure I couldn't fall back to sleep right away because I was excited that they found out I had the Apnea (I was sooo tired all the time).
4) I only had about 5 hours on the mask.

You beat me by a lot. I got 156 minutes and that was for an entire 8 hour night as I had to have a second night scheduled because by the time I met criteria during first sleep study there wasn't enough time left for titration.

I agree.

This was pretty much my experience as well. Everything will probably be great for you, but don't be discouraged if you get a slow start once you get the machine home. Everyone is different. And if you need help - just ask! Welcome!!

I felt great after my study as well. And I hated the wait to get my machine (all four days). Then I was disappointed that I didn't sleep like that at home. All in all, I think that part of the issue was that the room for my sleep study had a great mattress and was quite cool but with adequate covers. I was also half asleep when they put the mask on. (They didn't bother with having me pick something they simply slipped on pillows and a chin strap.)

In the end I had to find the right temp for my machine. I had to learn to calm down when putting on my mask. (I would go wade awake with the extra effort to breathe out.) But I sleep much better now and my wife enjoys the quiet.

I remember waking up sometime during the titration and thinking, "Holy shit, this is going to do something for me."

I felt great after a split study. Chose the mask before going to bed. They woke me up, put the mask on and went to sleep. I asked them in the morning if they had been popping corn because I could smell it. Alas just a dream, the first one in many years. 2 weeks later I got my brick. It was heaven being able to sleep. In 9 1/2 years I have only missed being on the machine about 5 nights for the whole night.

I didn't feel good at all. I didn't like anything about the sleep clinic and I'm surprised I slept at all. I think I slept for a few hours but not with a mask. I was so happy to get out of there. Got home, took a shower and went to sleep.

They called me several days later to tell me that I had sleep apnea and to make an appointment for a mask fitting.

Yes, I had a similar experience and like 1tree, I was a little disappointed when the same thing didn't happen at home. I guess it's just that first time in years you get some really good oxygen at night is sort of a shock and then your body is sort of adapted to it and doesn't react as strongly. I think of it like this - it's like when you lift weights for the first time in months (or years), especially bench press or squats. You really feel it the next several days, but subsequent workouts do not produce as much soreness. I don't think this means subsequent workouts are not as beneficial as that first workout, I believe they are. But the body adapts and you may not feel the same reaction every time.

Having said all that, I wish I had that post-sleep-study feeling every morning (and I only had about 3 hours with the mask). Sort of makes you think though, maybe these sleep study places are slipping us something in that air??? Conspiracy??

I dreaded my sleep study, but it went really well. I did take an ambien as I did not expect to be able to sleep well there. I am a severe night owl, normally going to bed after 4am. And I don't do well in hotels. I took my pillow and my own blanket to put inside the sheets. The tech lady was great. She introduced me to the cpap machine before I went to bed. I felt like it was about 2-3 hours into the night when she woke me and told me I had provided enough date and would now use the machine. I remember her putting it on me, and rolling over. Sometime later, I felt fidgety and was having trouble staying asleep. I turned my ipod on, and the time was after 7am. Normally a sleep time for me, so I just thought I felt uncomfortable. They woke me up at 8am, and I went home, feeling pleasantly surprised. I had requested the day off work so that I could go back to bed once home. But I stayed up all day and felt really good. I realized later that I was awake at 7am because I had gone to bed before midnight and slept well. So, I was uncomfortable because I had been in bed too long.

The very next night, without a machine, I dreamt that the sleep doctor called and scheduled my followup for November (I had the sleep study in April). I was so upset. I was going to have to wait 8 months for my machine. I woke up and realized it was just a dream. It did take 3 days to finally get my appointment scheduled for the following week. I have never looked forward to going to the doctor before. but this time I was. He showed me the graphs. The did wake me up about 2 1/2 hours in, and I had 71 apneas and 127 hypopneas duing that time. So, I had a good 5 hours with the machine before I got fidgety. I had my followup on a Thursday. My DME confirmed my insurance the next day, and I had my appointment with them on Monday. I was so excited. I even took a nap that afternoon so that I could try it out.

My first night was pretty good. Not as magical as the sleep study, and I think the other poster is right. The sleep study was such a shock to my system that it was amazing. Now I have to get used to it, and learn to adapt to it. Overall, it has gone pretty well over the 3 1/2 weeks so far. I feel like I wake up more often than before, at least I am aware of it more. But I know my quality of sleep is better. I feel better. I yawn less. I have more energy, especially if I have a good night. Even the first few days when I did not really feel more energetic, I did feel more cheerful, and almost like I wanted to sip or dance, but didn't quite have the energy for that. So, my mind is mentally more energetic. It will just take my body longer to catch up. I have also only use energy drinks a couple times. One day that I barely slept, and one night that I did not sleep at all. I had a big printing project with a morning deadline, and all 4 of my printers went on strike. I spent hours working on all 4 and finally convincing 2 of them to print most of the job in time to leave the house at 6:45am.

There have been some times when I could not get the mask to fit without leaking, and after 10-15 tries, I was clearly swearing at it, and getting upset. But overall, I have definitely noticed a huge improvement. I have also had 2 other dreams where I dream about dieing or wanting my machine when I got frustrated and took the mask off for the last couple hours. So, my brain clearly prefers the mask to be on.

I have also found that my high blood pressure is much better on days after a good night, and is now better most days. Before, I was consistently in the 160s, and now I am in the 130s with some good days in teh 120s and 110s. If I have a bad night, it goes right back to upper 160s. So, it is clearly related. 8 months of medication has done nothing to improve my numbers, yet I started getting some lower numbers a week into using the machine.
