Help! Trouble with mask fitting

Post by minniesc » Mon May 21, 2012 4:20 pm

Help! I was happily using the resmed quattro fx, with little problems until last month. Then, the cushion began popping out of the frame at night (which had happened a few times before, but not many) which woke me 4-5 times or more to put it back in. I went to my provider, and they replaced it three times. Still doing it. Went back to my dr., he suggested I tape the cushion in (?!), or ordering the mask in a larger size (it already is almost to the bottom of my chin) When I told him that the tape would make it difficult to clean, he agreed, then prescribed the resmed liberty. I like this ok, but have a problem with my mouth and throat being overly dry, to the point of I wake up with pain in the night trying to actually swollow and un-stick my tongue! I have my humidifier at 3.5, which leaves some moisture in my nose, so I really don't want to go higher with humidifier. I really someone has some advice for me; I have another week with the liberty before a month is up and I can't return it, so I don't want to be stuck with it if I don't have to be.
Any suggestions/help would really be appreciated. My husband is using the quattro fx with no problems.

Why didn't they just order you a new Quattro FX??? The original one sounds defective.

They have. I am on mask number two. I had this problem before, but after trying a different fit to my face, it stopped. I have since lost about ten pounds and have no luck. I wear a size small so can't go smaller.

Some people have really bad dry mouth with their full face masks despite maxing out the humidifier. Sounds like for some reason you are mouth breathing more with the Liberty than you did with the other mask. Any nasal congestion or something to make you mouth breath more? Your only choices for the dry mouth are to try increasing the humidity or add something to help prevent the dry mouth like Biotene mouthwash or Biotene gel. This is what other people do when they can't increase the humidity any more and their mouth is still bone dry.

I wonder if the nasal cushion things (not sure of official name ) may be too big, when I first did my sleep study the tech who wired me up felt my nostrils were too small for a nasal mask. I will try the option of Biotene for a dry mouth. Not sure the liberty is going to work for me. Seemed like even my teeth were sore today. Any suggestions that may work with a resmed S9 (yeah, I have the albatross!)? There is a cpap store about 40 minutes from me and I will get a prescription from my dr. and go visit it if necessary. My insurance pays for a new mask every four months, and I can return/exchange the liberty within a month. I also re-watched the video on putting on the quattro fx, and will give it another try. Does anyone know if the fx for women is any smaller than the original? I have seen it on their web site.
