Newbie questions for DME

Post by bsclarks » Thu May 17, 2012 1:50 pm

I was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea and am scheduled to meet with my DME next week to get my equipment. I have listed the equipment I am supposed to be receiving. my question is does anyone have a list of common questions to address while meeting with my DME for the first time? I have read quite a few posts on here already and I am very impressed with what a great support group this seems to be. I am looking forward to starting the therapy and am hoping for some good results to improve my lifestyle.

Thank You

I'm still a newbie, too, so I'm sure the other members will have way more insightful feedback and questions. Is this the mask that you tried during your sleep study?

I would ask the following:
  • What is their return policy for masks? Is it a 30-day trial?
  • Should this mask not work for me, what masks do you typically keep in stock?
  • Is my CPAP on a rent-to-own basis? If so, when will I own it?
  • Does my insurance require compliance data
Good luck!

1. Make sure they give you the Autoset and not the Autoset Escape. Double-check that they installed the SD-Card module.
2. Make sure they have a mask return policy. Unless you're incredibly lucky, you'll probably need go through a few mask options before finding your perfect fit. I wish I'd known that during my first 30 days.
3. Read the "What to do before you meet the DME" thread.
When in doubt, open the case. Remember: If you can't open it, you don't own it!

Prescribed APAP range - 6-10 cm/H2O, titrated at 8.
Current range - 9.0-11.5 cm/H2O - still searching for the magic "zero night" but averaging 2.2 AHI

Check out the new users icon on top of the page. You need to get a data capable machine (Resmed S9 autoset). Be sure your doctor specifically requests it on the prescription. Your cpap success will depend on you getting a mask that doesn't leak and is comfortable. I went thru about 6 masks until I found mine. Be prepared for this and know this journey is normal. Make sure the DME will exchange your mask within 30 days. Surf around this site on hose management, cleaning and tips for a successful journey. Work every issue you have here.

If possible, try to lie down with the mask on. See if there are any obvious leak issues with your head on a pillow.

This is the mask i was given at my sleep study. I only used it for about 3 hours or so as i did a split study but it seemed to feel fine for that short use. Anyone have experience with this mask?

Your mask looks kind of similar to the F&P Zest that I'm currently using. Overall, I like it. It looks like it uses the same headgear... which I'm actually a big fan of. If you have longish hair and/or a ponytail, it's really easy to find a place for it with the headgear. I've also not had any slippage issues with the headgear ... like I had with the TrueBlue headgear.

Please read my "What you need to know BEFORE you meet your DME" in my signature below.

Don't ask your DME questions about your insurance. There are many insurers and plans, and the DME may "think" they known your plan, but often they do not, or if they do, they aren't always truthful (e.g. "your insurance doesn't cover the S9 Autoset unless your doctor documents a pressure range"). You should KNOW what your insurance will cover and how BEFORE you walk into the DME's office. You should also know what your options are (other DME's covered by your insurance company) before you walk in so that if they are screwing with you you can walk out and proceed to another DME who won't play those games.

Hopefully you will be pleasantly surprised with excellent service, no bull hockey, and a liberal mask return policy to ensure that you get the best results possible from your therapy. But you will know what to do if not.
