Battery for PR System One REMstar AutoCPAP w A-Flex

Post by napstress » Fri May 11, 2012 3:18 pm

Hey, everyone. What do you think would be the simplest way for me to rig up a battery for my type of machine? I don't know the first thing about this sort of thing, but I'm going camping next week and want to bring my machine.

(I've come a long way: it took me 10 months to be able to use the machine, and now I won't go two nights without it!).
Epworth Sleepiness Scale: 14
Diagnostic study: overall AHI: 0.2 events/hour; overall RDI: 45 events/hour
Titration study: AHI: 6.1; RDI: 27; CPAP pressures: 5-8cm

Not-tired behind my eyes and with a clear, cool head!

There are several threads on this, but they boil down to a few critical questions:

How many nights will you be away from AC?
Will you have access to AC during the daytime?
Are you afraid of DIY?
What's your price range?

BTW, the PR1's power brick output is 12 VDC, 5.0 A. I haven't dug out the power curve info yet...

When in doubt, open the case. Remember: If you can't open it, you don't own it!

Prescribed APAP range - 6-10 cm/H2O, titrated at 8.
Current range - 9.0-11.5 cm/H2O - still searching for the magic "zero night" but averaging 2.2 AHI

Check out posts by a member named JohnBFisher. He's like the battery guru around here.

I just built one using his design, and it was easy. The parts mostly come from a site called http://www.atbatt.com. They are a very good vendor.

Good luck!

Not being handy with batteries I bought a Respironics battery , I get at least 2 nights with the humidifier (auto 12-15, humidity 2) your results may vary, It was pricey, but I just wanted convenience, comes in a case, will plugin to your car cigarette lighter. I wouldn't want to take it backpacking. Kathy
Any landing you walk away from is a good one; if you don't break your airplane it's excellent.

Here's the post I did on a Battery Backup Design:

viewtopic.php?t=49115#p449334

I use it as my primary battery backup for my ASV unit. After looking at the data from my ASV unit, I'm more convinced than ever that I need a battery backup. Even with my ASV unit, my breathing is not so hot ... LOTS of irregularities in my breathing pattern. Yup. I want to sleep with my ASV unit, even if we don't have power.

For the record, you don't need to be "handy" or skilled to build John's design. If you can turn a screwdriver or make a small hole with a drill, then you can build it.

When you see how much more battery power you get for the same $, you will want to build one rather than buy.
