Blister on nose: wear mask anyways or skip a few nights?

Post by am7357 » Fri May 11, 2012 12:10 pm

Hi everyone,

I've been on CPAP for 10 days and I have full face mask. I've never had any problems with it, except on the bridge of my nose, where a red mark progressively appeared and has now turned into a blister-like acne button. I tried putting various kinds of padding, but they all create major leaks. Now, the question is: should I skip a few nigths to let it heal or use the mask anyways (maybe the skin will adjust?). I've gotten used to the mask and I even kind of like it. Thus, I don't feel like sleeping without it, but it might make things worse. What do you recommend?

Thanks,
Anna

I started to get one of those red bumps and immediately began using a little bandaide and Neosporin. It was gone in two days. Since then no problems and now I use one of those wing shaped clear, thin gel pads across the bridge of my nose. it actually has stopped the leakage in that area and no more red sores.

A blister seal type bandage should work better--for soothing, and for mask fit.
You may need to 'turn the screw' a little on the forehead brace.
As the forehead cushion moves toward your head, the top of the other cushion moves away from your nose.

My heavenly days, what are they called and where do you get 'em? Sounds like the answer to a maidens prayer! Well, "maid's prayer" maybe.

I had the same problem with my quatro. I took a microfiber wax applicator pad and cut out a portion big enough to stick up in the top of the nasal bride and that stays there. Keeps me from getting the soar. My pressure is 28/24 so I reall gotta crank mine down. I'm looking for different mask that seals better.

As Anna knows, I too am sitting here with a bandaid on my nose.

For me, it seems to be because I am between sizes on the Quattro FX, and while the medium leaks, the small bites back.

Last night I tried moleskin with the medium, and while it protected my nose really well, it made the mask leak even worse than before.

Tonight, I think I'm going to try putting a bandaid/polysporin on my nose and sleep with the medium again. I'd rather deal with leaks for a few nights than keep irritating the skin.

Anna, do you still have both the medium and the small? If so, perhaps try sleeping with a protected nose and the medium? If not, you might want to put something thick and protective over the blister and see if you can tolerate the small like that for tonight. Because I don't want you to have to have a crappy night sleep without your PAP! But if even that doesn't work, I'd probably sleep without it for a day to let the skin heal. Otherwise, you're just going to keep wearing at the skin and it will only get worse.

I could not conquer the blister-issue, but a lot of folks have. Keep trying the bandaids and gel pads. Padacheek makes a pad also. Resmed also makes masks for wide and shallow noses. Keep trying.

Two gel nose liners you might try:
Boomerang and Gecko.

It's a ResMed Gecko nasal pad. My DME gave me one and a pack of RemZzzzzz mask liners to try. I now use both.

I tried the Gecko and it made the mask leak like crazy. I ended up cutting it to make it narrower (bye bye 25$!) and that still didn't help. Even thin gauze causes leaks…

Thank you so much for the info.! I really like those mask liners too.
