Just bought Resmed S9 autoset - any tips?

Post by mlasham » Mon May 07, 2012 8:56 pm

Hi
I've just bought myself a resmed s9 autoset which arrived today. I bought this myself rather than via doctor, etc.
I have gone into the setup and set the auto range between 4 and 9 as my sleep study recommended between 7 and 8 however I've had better results on my loan machine between 8 and 10.
Any tips on best ways to set up and use? I have the swift fx nasal pillows too.

Don't have tips but I used that machine from last July until last week. Any questions feel free to PM. It's a great machine!

Hi,

I'd consider setting it for something like 8 to 12. The upper number doesn't matter much as long as it is high enough so you don't max out on pressure. You could even set it for 20, and it wouldn't really matter much as long as it is above your normal max point.

The lower number, however, is really important. You want it to be within 1 or 2 cm of pressure from your typical 95% pressure level. If 8 to 10 was working well for you, then pick 8 as the lower number. If you set it any lower, the machine might take too long to ramp up when you have events, and it will not be able to react in time to provide the needed treatment.

A wide range of pressures is OK for doing experiments to find out what your pressure needs are, but once you find that magic 95% pressure level, you want to set up a pretty tight range that is +/- 1 or 2 cm of pressure.

Get the rescan 3.16 software. You can get the download link right here just do a search. Get a couple extra 2 gig SD cards just in case and card reader. The dishwasher safe tank for the S9 is really easy to clean. Get one at cpap.com.

Jweeks is right about the lower number being close to what you need to set. When I first got my S8 Autoset II I found that setting the lower number close to the 95% pressure worked much better. I set my S9 I got recently the same way and it has worked great. Good luck.

One other tip: do you have the slimline hose or regular hose? Make sure the settings and your hose are the same as there is a difference.

I just noticed this the other day that my S9 was set for the regular hose but I'm using the slimline. I fixed the setting but didn't really notice a change. Any idea what the difference actually is?

Not sure - but my DME was very clear in advising to make sure settings done properly for the slimline hose.

Hi
Thanks everyone for the helpful advice.
Last night was my first night on the new S9 but it was not great.
Firstly, it sounded like Darth Vadar was in the room - my wife's comment - everytime I took a breath the machine made a loud huffing/breathing noise similar to Darth.
Next, as the pressure got up above 10 I think, the nasal pillows started to leak either at the top inside corners of my nostril or at the bottom somewhere. I tried medium and large pillows with the same results. Very frustrated but still smiling

Thanks

Don't throw it out the bedroom window when it does not behave the way you wanted.

On a more serious note, your biggest challenge now will be to find the correct mask and size for you. Each of us is different, and what works great for a friend may not be at all helpful for you.

Last night was my first night with an S9 Autoset as well, but 4.5 years using an S8 Elite left me with vastly different opinions. This machine is seriously quiet compared to the previous generation. My wife was very impressed as well.

There is going to be a bit of noise at the mask mainly as you exhale, but generally it is so much quieter than the snoring you'd probably have without it that spouses are happy for the change. It also depends on the mask how loud that part is.

After one night I'd have to say this machine is awesome! Give it a while to get used to it.

Same here. After 2+ yrs with S8 AutoSet II, the first thing I [and my wife] noticed was the S9 Auto was super quiet.
