Provigil is going to be outrageous for about another 6 months, and then the price should start dropping.

The patent case went against the original producer, and one company got a 180 day exclusive deal to make the generic. So both the original company and the new generic are trying to make as much cash as possible on the people that do not know what is going on.

For the original company this is their last chance to rake in money. Doctors and pharmacies will be hearing about the generic and moving patients to it. So they might as well make cash while the price on the generic is still so high...

And why is that price so high when it is a generic drug? Because the new company knows that doctors and pharmacies will be allowing patients to use the generics, and for the next 180 days they are the only producer of a generic version. Many insurance insist patients use a generic if it is available as well. That means they now make the only option for those insurance plans, and that means they can price it at almost the same price as the name brand.

In about 6 months this stupid game ends. Other people will make the drug, and price it at a much lower price point. Until then, look for lots of special offers on Nuvigil. They are trying to get doctors to move everyone to Nuvigil instead of Provigil, since they do not have to worry about a generic brand on that for years. I got a deal were I am guaranteed to not pay a higher co-pay on Nuvigil than I would for a generic brand for some time period (cannot remember exactly how many months).
