How many who actually hear the noise are wearing nose only masks?
Well... I just picked up a S9 Auto last week and use a Nasal mask. And mine DOES make the "cooooing" sound on exhale.

In "my" opinion it is fairly loud, but for some weird reason, I manage to go to sleep quickly. Thank goodness !

I was hoping against hope that my brand new machine would not make that darn noise, but it does.

It has the newest firmware available as well, so that is not the problem.

I have not experimented with the EPR settings to see if that makes any difference, but I I'll be fooling around with it soon. I figured I would get used to it and start using the machine right away first before I changed anything.

I use the S9 AutoSet and do (barely) hear a very short, faint, low pitch 'coo' sound, but it's so faint and so short that it's just not a bother and I stopped paying attention to it. I too think it's a faint machine motor noise.

Certainly little things can become big irritations for anyone who fixates on them. Then they can indeed be 'real' problems. I think that's what is occurring for some of us here.

For others, it's possible the sound is actually loud and can't be ignored. They may have a lemon. Even Apple's popular iPhone 4's sometimes ship out as a lemon. If that's truly the case, go see the supplier, machine in hand, give him a demo right then and there and "Get 'er done!"

My suggestion, try to switch brands because imo certain sounds are inherent characteristics of the particular design and components used in any machine, whether xpap, refrigerator, automobile, etc. With the possible exception of truly loud unusual noises, I doubt that the so-called low pitched soft 'coo' sound is a component failure or defect.

I only occasionally notice the coo. It has never bothered me. But that could be because I sleep without my hearing aids in.

Thanks to this thread I now notice the cooing. I use a TrueBlue nasal mask. So, I don't think the type of mask has anything to do with it. I listen to audiobooks as I fall asleep so don't notice the noise so much.

Whoaaaa, there, kimasabi. So it honks now?! Not merely a faint 'coo'. And it wakes your wife and you. So you put a pillow over it and lowered it to the floor?! Take your lemon back and "honk" that baby at your DME. You won't have to say a word. Just tell the dude what you want instead. End of subject. Next case.

Papit. another poster on here made a similar profound and respectful odservation recently. I'll say again. My original S9 made the noise. This is the replacement. It also makes the noise. It's not what you would call loud, but very noticable in a quiet room. In my opinion, it's the result of an engineering design, since a considerable number of these machines coo, honk, burp, chirp, wheeze, cough, snort, grunt or what ever description someone describes, all at the completion of the exhalation. I do have a question, though. If your S9 doesn't make noise, why is your dog barking?

Where are your S9's made?
There seems to be different sounds for the Aussie vs Singapore ones. The Singapore ones tend to purr more. Its a result of the plastic on the turbine being out of balance more so they have to cut more balancing holes in it and that causes more noise somehow. They could fix this by moving the balance drill a bit one way or another or by keeping the flowing air out of that area. This is not the turbine moving backwards, it only slows down on exhale but there can be some beat harmonics. If there was a standard for the air inlet where we could buy after market filters, we could buy after market silenceers too.

My machine is brand new and also makes an annoying sound. At night when everything is very quiet it really sticks out, I will need to make some sort of a change, this is not good.

I recorded it last night and just posted it on YouTube, put on your headphones and give it a listen.

Yep... that's the sound mine makes too. But mine is even more of a whistle/coo sound at the very end of the exhale.

Annoying for sure.....

I just listened to the audio on the YouTube file and I can say that my S9 Autoset has never made that noise.

I started a month ago with an S9 Escape and Mirage Quatro FX FF and it made the woooo noise on exhale. I just swapped (yesterday) the Escape for a brand new S9 Autoset and am now using the Ultra Mirage mask and heated hose and it makes the EXACT same sound on exhale. It only happens for a brief second when I start to exhale.

I set my auto beginning pressure a little higher to see if that made any difference, well it did, the sound has a higher pitch now. It went from cooooing to angry birds

Nice YouTube post. Yep, sounds just like mine although perhaps amplified a bit for the YouTube post. That's the 'little baby owl' I mentioned earlier. I think of it as a free 'extra' to give us a reassuring coo, "it's ok, baby". I actually like it!
I really think it's a normal sound that comes with the S9's. If it's a real problem for you, I think you might have to talk to your doc to switch machines to some other brand. In the meantime, I wouldn't be surprised if you get the run-around from your supplier.

An alternative is to add some white noise (which I have used for years, well before xpap). A small fan does the trick for that as a quickie experiment you might want to try. Many white noise machines are on the market that allow you to make adjustments to the sound (e.g., like the soft gurgling of a stream or water falls in the distance) or give it a little rhythm like waves on the beach, etc. Hope it works out for you.

That sounds like a recently made Aussie made pump. The Singapore made ones Purr more.

What is the "exhale" pressure setting.... (press both rectangles and look at the "full stats" menu)

I think the older models were quieter.
