Sleep study was a failure

Post by jimjam » Mon Apr 23, 2012 9:41 pm

I have all the classic symptoms of sleep apnea.
I did my sleep study 2 weeks ago. I could not fall asleep no matter how much I tried. I do not usually have insomia. It was probably the hookups and strange environment or I was too anxious to get a positive result so I can start addressing my problem. The technician in attendance could not divulge any results but gave me the indication that the study did not show anything positive.

I am seeing the doctor tomorrow. What should I tell him? I am afraid another study may result in the same way?

Report the problems you had getting and staying asleep to the doc. Tell him this was a very abnormal night for you.

If he suggests another sleep test, you might ask if it would be ok to take an Ambien that night.

You could also inquire about whether it might be possible to do an in-home sleep test.

Jim,

Just tell the doctor what happened. Failed sleep studies are not all that uncommon. In the future, ask your doctor in advance for something to help you sleep.

The data that you get might still be of value. For example, if you do have a fairly bad case of OSA, they will know enough to send you for a titration study next time rather than a diagnostic study or a split study.

I had the exact same problem. with all the wires and being forced to sleep on my back i could not sleep. i had to do a second study with an ambien. still slept very poorly but they were able to collect enough data to get a titration. you are not alone. i usually sleep just fine.
