Neti pot with stuffed up nostril

Post by davelikesbeer » Sun Apr 22, 2012 5:30 pm

It's allergy season and I've been stuffy at night. I finally decided to try a neti pot. For two nights it worked okay, but last night one of my nostrils was completely closed off. As a result, I wasn't able to perform a nasal rinse.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to use a neti pot when a nostril is completely clogged?

If you lie down for a while with the plugged side up, the stuffiness usually moves to the lower side nostril.
If you rinse the side you can, you should be able to get the other side later.
If not, you might need to see an ENT about possible other obstructions in your nose.
(You swear you never put a bean up there? )

I had used the pot but stopped in favor of the rinse squeeze bottle. You can get a little pressure with the squeeze bottle in case one side is stopped up.

As a last resort you can use Afrin to open it up, then use the neti pot.

Dave,

Don't know if this will help, but I use an aroma therapy scent from PurSleep called 'Clear' to help with my seasonal allergies. Most often I am able to blow my nose well enough, just before getting into bed, that the combination of PAP air pressure and the 'Clear' scent pushing through the nasal passages will quickly open them up and stay open the rest of the night. For me this technique works excellent on my seasonal allergy stuffiness, but is definitely more challenged by a really nasty cold where the nasal passages feel like they are completely closed.

Hope this helps,

John

When you use it on the clear nostril what prevents the solution from going down your throat?

I found that the NeilMed squeeze bottle works better than the Neti Pot...for me.

I use the squeeze bottle as well. If your head is tilted far enough back, the saline would likely exit through the mouth. Sometimes I do it on purpose to clean more deeply and not only my nostrils.

I think I will try a squeeze bottle so I can build up some pressure. Any recommendations on brand/model?

NeliRinse, the same people that make the NetiPot.
