when I was new at this, someone suggested something that helped me keep from taking off my mask at night.
Are you ready?
Don't laugh, it works...

Sleep with oven mitts on.

IndyDave wrote:Welcome. I often have trouble getting to sleep, and was especially worried when I started my xpap a couple weeks ago. My doc gave me an Rx for a couple weeks low-dose of valium - used it the first week, and it really helped a lot. I've got sinus problems and am prone to infections, and so far have been ok on the nasal pillow. If I feel stuffy at all before bedtime, I use the saline nasal rinse - the stuff you flush up one nostril and it drains out the other one, then reverse. Man, that stuff is amazing. I use the little sports-type bottle that comes with it rather than a neti pot. I think I mentioned in another post, I have some seasonal allergy of some sort that kicked in last night, and again, when he has them my doc keeps me supplied with a couple of samples of Nasacort. I took one blast last night and was good. You may want to ask if they have a sample you can try and see if that helps though the sinus infection. That said, once I've made the adjustment completely, and save up a bit more $$ I plan on getting a full face or hybrid mask for those times when I'm completely clogged - or I keep wondering about cold and flu time...

My first night, I managed an hour, maybe... but then about 2/3 of the way through the night woke up and put it back on. I just had to be stern with myself, that it was ok if I had to take it off, but then I had to stick the mask back on when I woke again. Again, it took a week or more to mostly keep it on at night, though even now I will wake and take it off for a couple of minutes, to give my nose a good scratching. I don't remember if you said what mask you are using, but another option to keeping it on is a chin strap - worn over the mask straps. Then you really have to work at getting it off.

Hi Dave, Thanks for welcome....After 5 nites of taking hrs to fall asleep I took 1.25 mg Ambien(against Dr advice) I was asleep fast! and last nite was longest I've slept since starting this journey 6 days ago....and I had AHI = 0.00 to boot...I think it was combination of taking low dose Ambien and sleeping on my stomach (my pre CPAP sleep position)

I too have sinus problems along with COPD...I have sinus infection now(pre CPAP therapy starting) I have all my pills, snorters and losengers by my bedside..I feel like my room is on a hospital ward sometimes

I'm kinda scared to use the chinstrap..I think i am a open mouth sleeper..Dont have bed partner so not sure...I do have dry mouth and sore throat but that can be attributed to sinus trouble too...

Good luck with your quest...Mo

And for hoses - I have a Cal King bed, so its 6' wide. when I turn over at night, I just roll across the bed, and the hose wasn't long enough - I just bought an 8' hose to replace the 6'. Along with the 1.5 foot or so from the mask, that's plenty of slack. I meant to do it last weekend, but didn't - I'm going to try and find a 3M removable plastic hook wide enough to hold the hose, and just use that to suspend it over the middle of the headboard - maybe use some twist tie or a computer cable velcro tie to hold it there. Way cheaper than the hose managers.
