filling up with air
Very new user to Cpap. Only been using for 2 weeks. No positive results as of yet, but a real discomfort. My stomach fills with air and I wake passing gas. Of course this wakes me up then I can't return to sleep. Was using a full mask and the tech said I was gulping air. Switched to using a chin strap to keep my mouth shut and a nose mask. Same problem. The machine I am using is a ResMed S9 series. I must say that I am very happy to find this forum.

Hi CraneGuy, I'm not a doctor but is your nose stuffed? Air gets into your stomach when a person swallows air rather than breathing it.
Re: filling up with air
It's called aerophagia. And it's a real problem for some of us. And a nuisance for many others.
Do a search for aerophagia and you'll get plenty of tips on how to handle it.
I find that my head position and my tongue position are important. The tighter I'm curled into a ball, the better. And the more my tongue stays planted touching the roof of my mouth just behind my top front teeth, the better.

I find the gassy bit hilarious among family.
Co-workers are not so amused. . .
Sleeping on my left side seems to help some, due to gravity/physiology.

I have the same problem , sometimes it's much worse than other times, but it's nightly. I think it's because I tend to mouth breathe? I do pass a lot of gas because of it, but now at least I can keep up with my husband in that respect.

Re: filling up with air
Feeling very frustrated this morning, I went online to try and find others having the bloating issue with the CPAP. I use the Respironics, REMstar Pro whichi has the humidifier. I also use the nasal pad. I got my machine in August osf 2011. I am home from work this morning because of the stomach bloating. Just below my diaphragm. I was asked if I breath through my mouth but since I'm sleeping, how do I know. I wake several times during the night so I don't really feel that I am getting that much restful sleep? I guess I feel that once the doctor prescribes the sleep study and the CPAP you are really on your own. They never tell you about any possible problems adjusting to the CPAP, just to wear it every night. Any suggestions or comments from other users?
