Clean CPAP humidifier

Post by kevin79 » Sat Mar 31, 2012 11:49 am

I've been using a CPAP machine for close to a year now. It has a humidifier in it and I've been using tap water in it instead of distilled water. Now it is getting a calcium buildup in it. How do I clean the buildup?

I would use 25% vinegar...75% water. Then start using distilled water.

Vinegar and water solution. About half and half. Let it sit and then slosh it around and rinse really, really well. Might take a second soaking depending on how much build up but vinegar will clean it right up.

OH Dear!

I cleaned my deposits with neat malt vinegar!!
Shaking it around for a few minuted while rubbing the deposits with my fingers.

Have I ruined my humidifier??It looks OK!
It has cleaned my humidifier beautifully!!

It is now deposit free.

White vinegar is usually recommended because it's cheap, and has little color or sediments in it.
Ifyou got your tank nice and clean, no harm done.
(I would NOT use balsamic, though--just a waste)

What type of CPAP machine do you have? Replacement humidifier chambers aren't that expensive. It's good to have a spare. Some can be cleaned in the dishwasher.

Most of us find it's worth the effort to use distilled water. If you use tap water, dump the water every night, and refill in the next night, and wash it more often.
