Considering the F & P Icon

Post by lcook7281 » Wed Mar 21, 2012 7:06 pm

My DME has recommended that I consider the F & P Icon as my next machine. I might be able to get it in the next few weeks, It may be a year until my insurance lets me get it.

Things that I am wondering....I have the software for my S8 vantage and like to look at the reports. However, am I able to get the software for the Icon? It looks like there is an open source version of something out there as well, but I haven't been on the boards for a long time so I am not really familiar with what is out there.

Also, those of you with the icon, do you like it? I have been told the humidiy on it is great. I like the small size and the fact I can get rid of the alarm clock.

Any info you can provide would be appreciated.

Lisa

Hi,

First of all here is a link to a video we made about the Icon which will help you get a feel for its features. http://www.cpaplibrary.com/machine-education

The Icon is a good machine and does have a great humidifier. The only cons to the machine are that it is missing a few features that most good machines have. THe first is smartstart or auto On. Most machines now can start automatically when you put the mask on but the Icon lacks that feature. The second is that there is no EPR or Cflex which is pressure reduction when you exhale. If you do not need these features than it is a great machine.

Hope this helps,

I think that if you check around you might find somebody with some data screen shots... seems to me that it wasn't as detailed of data as that of the Resmed data or even the Respironics data that you'd be used to seeing.

I got my Infosmart software from my DME. Here is a link to some reports so you get a feel.

I don't think it is as data rich as other software, and I plan to get Sleepyhead for Windows when it's ready.

I have the Icon Auto and I like it for all the reasons you listed: it provides plenty of moisture and it clears space on my night stand. It's easy to use and set. I've had mine for three weeks and no complaints. Let me know if you have any other questions. The video posted by sleepnationtv is pretty thorough and gives a good summary of the features.

I have been using a Premo for the past 18 months. I highly recommend it, it is my first machine, so I can't compare it to any other one. It is user friendly heated hose etc. The software can be bought for $40 from your DME with a letter from your Doctor.

The software is easily downloaded from the internet (for free) from the torrent sites. It is a bit of a resource pig though, in terms it is a client/server database package that was not really designed for end-user use. I had it running quickly after getting my ICON Auto.

That said, if you have a fairly "modern" computer, it runs fine once installed and you figure out the couple tricks to get it going. If Sleepyhead ever gets working with it though, I would quickly convert to that just due to the smaller footprint on the computer and ease of use.

Overall, I have only used this machine so have no real-world comparisons...but so far, it has been great. Love the "night light" function, easy to find off/on, great moisture (and I'm not on the highest setting), the heated hose works great (no moisture build-up at all).

My only criticism would be the tank is difficult to "manually" clean (if you are into that), but I toss it in the automatic dishwasher once a week....so far, still clean as new.

If the OP gets an ICON Auto instead of the regular ICON CPAP then pressure relief comes in the form of the SensAwake Technology.

I've been renting the F&P Icon auto now for about 10 months. This is my first machine so i can't compare to anything else. It's a good machine and the obvious benefit of it over other machines is its small size. I find the other really useful advantage is the alarm clock - why don't all machines have this? The humudifier seems to work well so no complaints here. Now to the software - it is easily available from torrent sites and is free. You can also purchase the software from various places and people on this forum can point you in the right direction. As others have mentioned, the stats don't seem to be as detailed as other machines though it does give you the important stuff that is really all you need - ahi, hours of use, leak rate etc etc.

The SensAwake feature sounds great in theory though it doesn't seem to work all that well on my machine - maybe my machine is faulty. I find that most of the time when i wake, the pressure is still on the highest setting (i'm in auto mode) - the machine has not detected that i've woken up. This is really my only complaint.

The other advantage is that this machine is not manufactured by Resmed - a disgraceful company that tries to dictate who can and can't purchase their equipment at reasonable prices depending on where you live.

Check out my comments on the SleepyHead support here viewtopic/t75935/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=75 ... 20#p689520

It is currently better than the F&P software and if they get the flow waveform working it will be like having your own sleep lab!

Well the decision is still on but improved. I looks like I will get to get a new machine. I was able to prove (via software) that I have had my machine 6 months longer than my insurance company thought I had owned it.

I kept trying to find an icon machine that I could test, and found that most of the DME's have a plastic shell of the machine but not the real machine for someone to test. I called a local DME who suggested that I call the F & P rep and talk to him. What an AWSOME idea. I am meeting at the DME's office tomorrow and I will get to test the machine.

If by chance the insurance company does not let me purchase the machine I will purchase it online since it has a large spread of prices. I think I can get into the machine for considerably less than the RESMED.

If I hate it...well, the insurance company can always purchase me a new one when they decided my 5 years is up whether they decide it is in 6 months or 1 year.
